"Free Stuff"

The folks who are getting the free stuff, don't like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now... The people who are forcing the people to pay for the free stuff   have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So... The people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this. All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason? The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.

The  United States  officially became a Republic in 1776, 235 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. We have one chance to change that In 2012.  Failure to change that spells the end of the  United States  as we know it.

I agree with you up to a point.

That Americans are mostly monolingual is a disadvantage we need to change.

But printing every government form in six or ten languages is rediculous.

Look at how hard it is for Canada to keep two "official".

It is not hard for Canada to do this, nor is it hard for Belgium, and Switzerland has FIVE languages, and prints everything in at least four of them. Canada has been bilingual forever. I can't remember when I saw a monolingual Canadian banknote. Do ypou seriously think that printing money in two languages costs more? It's no big deal.

Spanish and English in the Southwest and FL. French and English in New England. Creole in South FL.

Do you want to share a highway with people who cannot understand the signs, seriously? One acident could cost you a lot more than a few bilingual signs. And no, you cannot keep people from driving by denying them licenses. That will result in even worse accidents.

Being as I am a linguist, I imagine that I know more about languages than you do.

What you know about Canada? Only that a few Quebecois who insist on being monolingual annoy other Canadians from English Canada. There has not been a monolingual PM in Canada for generations.

The fact is, that NO country has managed to eliminate people from communicating in their native tongue, anywhere. The best they can do is promote another language, as the mainland Chinese did with Mandarin in Taiwan, and teach it in the schools.

But Taiwanese still speak their native language. They still speak Polish in Hamtramck, French in New Orleans and Lafayette and Yiddish in Brownsville.

But again, the issue is "can the national government dictate English only?" and the answer is no, it can't. This is a local issue, anyway.

if I go to China, Russia, Poland, or Italy I don't expect all the traffic signs to be in English too.

but you can make English the official language
and people either learn it or they don't get catered to in some foreign language
all job apps, all voter cards, all govt forms, all classrooms need to be in English only
official government business at all levels would be conducted solely in English.
This includes all public documents, records, legislation, regulations,  hearings, official ceremonies & public meetings
using English will get you ahead in almost all cases here in the United States
the English language is the common thread that Americans of all backgrounds can share
currrently 31 states have some form of "English Official Language" as law
