The idea that the French Revolution was somehow worse than the previous royal tyranny of the various Louies was partly English propaganda. The worst thing about it was that it ended in more tyranny, under Napoleon, followed by wars that decimated the population and more tyranny. But life was better after the Revolution than before for most of the population. Essentially about 80% of the population were not much better than slaves before the Revolution. The people of England had more freedoms than the French thanks to the Magna Carta and the replacement of the king by Cromwell in the 1600's.
