It is absurd to say that AIPAC is not a Jewish lobby. AIPAC presents itself as a Jewish lobby to Jews here in Miami all the time. It would be absurd for the US to go to war and have more American soldiers die so that Netanyahu can steal more of the West Bank.

Hegel is the right guy for this job. McCain is an utter posturing asshole.

Hegel is about as good as we are going to get, who better do we espect to work for President Obama?

Perhaps this is really the best Obama can do .

I don't think McCain is stupid, no. He is quite full of himself, and tends to take whatever position he thinks will get him donations and votes. There is no reason to grill Hegel over the "surge", all that is over and done with. Forcing someone to answer yes or no to a question with many nuances is what I mean by calling him an asshole. He is posturing, playing some sort of game like dogs do when they are vying to be leaders of the pack, and it makes him look like a fool.

Oh bullshit...Gates worked for Obama and was much better.
Hagel looks like old confused drunk.
We are in a war...we need someone on the ball.
Even CNN reported how shitty Hagel looked.
Former Under Secretary of Defense Michele Flournoy would be much better.

Based on I saw of Hagel's answers to the questions offered I'd pull him if I was Obama. He looked weak.

On McCain. He thinks the Iraq war started and ended with the surge. I give him credit for supporting it but it wasn't his idea. It came from special operations. Most people don't realize what the surge actually was. The increase in troops was only the tip of the iceberg. The surge itself was an increase in assassinations aimed at the bomb makers.

The Iraq war was a huge mistake. The surge, as BSB says, was more than just sending more troops.

Everyone involved in mongering wars should ask the question: how many dead American soldiers is an Iraq without Saddam worth? How many Americans are an acceptable number to sacrifice to keep a guy like Karzai in charge in Afghanistan?

Say, if we had a functioning democracy in Iraq, and all it cost was the elimination of sirs and "Christians", would that be an acceptable price? What if we could get by with only Wayne LaPierre being tortured and beheaded, would that be a fair trade?

What sort of deal could we get if all it cost us was John McCain's head on a stick?

Put the real price on these unnecessary stupid wars and it makes things easier to understand.

We get into these wars, make a huge splash, generate a giant footprint, and then stand around with our thumbs in our mouths wondering why they don't bow down to us and reveal all.

It takes forever to crack the wall of silence any society is going to put up when invaded and occupied. The surge was only possible because after years of occupation we made enough inroads, and some Iraqis saw a benefit in helping us, to gather the intelligence necessary to go after the real trouble makers.  In this case it was the bomb makers. Many, of the bomb makers, were outsiders and the Iraqi people got sick and tired of them so they gave them up.

But at what cost to us, and what was really gained? The middle east is falling apart now anyway. Without outside help. It had to happen.  Their way of doing business wasn't going to hold. The internet, face book, and so forth, just brings too many into play for the ruling class to control.
