The answer is they are screwed because they screwed themselves.

stupidity causes disaster.
That may be a part of Zen.
It is certainly a part of Buddha's teachings.

Notice that the whole conflict was caused by an addiction to cigarettes- which are worse than useless to the good life and are symbolic of modern civilization.
