I think a list of names is the point.

I wonder what that list will really be used for.

If the government is running this, then good for them.
It certainly is not illegal to dupe potential murderers.

Nice to know that to the left, anyone exercising their 2nd amendment rights, is a "potential murderer".    ::)   I guess that's kind of along the lines that anyone born is a potential racist?

Most Americans are not interested in buying assault rifles.

Excluding a majority of the left, most Americans are not interested in being racist..........and?

Nor is an AR15 an assault rifle (for the gazillionth time)

You do realize more people are killed with a hammer in this country, than a rifle, right??  So, every carpenter and handyman interested in buying a hammer is a "potential murderer"?

I didn't think of it being the government.

A list of people with disposable income is a valuable list, lots of scammers need lists like that.

      Including our government?

           Hmmmm.....

That is distasteful ,would it be entrapment , or just trolling?

I would think that it is most likely someone compiling a sucker list of people who want to buy illegal guns. Once they have the money of the suckers, the suckers would be reluctant to complain to the government about the rip off.

Not an entirely bad thing: it is a good thing that stupid, easily duped people are not armed with lethal weapons.

So, in other words, using your parameters, every carpenter and handyman who wants to purchase a hammer, is a potential murderer.  Good to know, I guess

The main purpose of a hammer is not to kill people. The AR 15 is a  devivce that has killing people as its principle function.
You are very poor at analogies.

Wrong again.  The main purpose of an AR15 is dependent on the intentions of the user....just as a hammer is.  When the intentions are to save a life, an AR15 is an exponentially better choice.  When the intention is to kill....well, the statistics demonstrate more lives are killed with a hammer than a rifle, and exponentially more lives killed than those killed by an AR15 specifically

However, if the intention is to drive a nail thru some wood, the hammer is an exponenially better choice.....than pretty much, any rifle, including an AR15

That's how analogies work......making concepts simple to understand.  Especially those concepts that are pretty simple, and fully supported by facts and statistics to begin with

Try doing anything with an AR 15 other than shooting something or someone that is any way useful.
A pistol would be more useful for most self defense purposes.

Try using a hammer to change a light bulb.....or eating breakfast. .....or waxing your car.  Its a fricken TOOL.  Its the intention of the user, and a firearm, like an AR15, when the intention is to defend oneself is superior to even the best hammer.  And in this country MORE people are killed with a hammer, than with a rifle.

I'm really sorry that facts keep getting in your way.   Perhaps you need to start a movement to ban hammers
