Greens' climate plan sees 12-cent tax at the pumps

Carbon toll is price to avert environmental `catastrophe,' May says

June 06, 2007
Susan Delacourt
Ottawa Bureau Chief

OTTAWA–The Green party wants Canadian drivers to pay an extra 12 cents a litre at the gas pumps as the price of averting environmental "catastrophe."

Leader Elizabeth May is boasting that her party is the only one politically brave enough to call for carbon taxes that would discourage automobile use and finance other tax cuts that would allow consumers to make smarter environmental choices.

"Right now, the Green Party of Canada is the only Canadian political party prepared to state this obvious reality," May said yesterday. "We will use those carbon taxes to reduce taxes elsewhere."

May rolled out her party's environmental plan yesterday in part to coincide with the G-8 meeting starting today in Germany, where Canada's action on this issue – or lack of it – is a major story.

The Green leader had harsh words for Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his announced intentions to be a "bridge" between countries that have signed on to the Kyoto air quality accord and the United States, which hasn't.

"If we stop being with the rest of the world and start siding with George Bush, we are global saboteurs and that's what Mr. Harper is doing right now in Germany," May said.

The environmental challenge is similar to the space race about 50 years ago in which then-president John F. Kennedy said the United States would put a man on the moon, May said.

"He couldn't prove it when he said it. He could mobilize the resources, fix the political will, and engage the public's spirit and imagination in a bold, collective venture," she said. "Surely we can do the same thing for purposes of survival."

May sees the political landscape divided on the environment, with Harper's government on one side and the Greens, Liberals, New Democrats and the Bloc Québécois, with differences on their degrees of activism, on the other.

Fine with me.  Before my heart attack I was riding my bike to work every day except winter-time and I'd sold my car.  Now I work from home but I still had to get a car  - - not the big gas-guzzler I used to have, just a small Japanese car which is great on gas and when I get re-tested (which I've been procrastinating almost a year now) the first thing I'm gonna ask is if I can go back to riding my bike on the road in addition to the stationary bike I gotta pedal every morning.

I think they oughtta tax the ass off anyone who drives a car when he or she could be riding a bike.  As long as they're not geographically isolated.  Selfish bastards are polluting the planet because they're too fucking lazy to get off their ass and pedal.  Well the least anyone can do is make'em pay for the cleanup.

So Canada will be installing air scrubbers strategically throughout the provinces to clean up the air that they air to be paid via taxation to clean?

Sure they will.

What they will do is use the money to shore up some ill conceived social spending project that costs 1000 times more than estimated.

That is the nature of the beast.

If they collect the money to clean the air, it necessarily follows that the money collected will be spent instead on "ill-conceived social spending?"  And that's because "it's in the nature of the beast?"

You've got a lot of faith in the nature of the beast, BT.  Me, I prefer to put my faith in the nature of the Canadian government.  Yeah, that one, the one that paid for my operation, for my wife's operation, for our rehab and for all our drugs.  THAT government.  They've managed to create a beautiful and reasonably well-run society here with equal medical treatment for all, safe streets and a lively multicultural environment.  And if you want to know how they managed, it's because they've learned not to be dominated by their fears - - fears of "terrorism," fears of blacks and "foreigners," fears of gay people, of "socialism" - - while you folks, driven by fear of practically everything, allowed a bunch of charlatans to take over control and lead you right over the edge.

That's nice Mikey.

I look forward to budget analysis of where that 12 cents per litre goes towards.

Do you really think it will be used for a clean air initiative?

The European proposal

I would not worry too much about this latest piece of Eurotrash. Does anyone actually believe the Italians would vote to ban Ferraris and Lambos, and the Germans to ban Porsche. These companies are national icons in these countries and they will defend them to their last CO2 filled breath.

The report is right in one respect the power of cars has gone up by 28% but no speed limit has gone up. They should rase that the speed limit so we can use the extra power.

I drive a 4.4 litre V8, I love it. I love the way it drives and the noise it makes. Driving a car like this makes me very happy. Everyone in my family drives 'Gas Guzzlers' and we all love them. Oh, did I forget to mention they all run on LPG? We don't drive them because we care about C02, we drive them because we only pay 39.9p a litre for fuel!

First of all, BT, it's a Green Party initiative.  Do you really think the Green Party has any realistic chance of setting Canadian government policy in the near future?  I WISH!!!!

But answering this as a hypothetical, why the hell not?
