This is part of an email I just received from a dear friend, which is self-explanatory:
I am also fearful that there is an irreperable anti-American sentiment in the
Muslim world that makes a diplomatic meeting-of-the-minds or even long
term movement towards a united front against radical Islam unrealistic.
I am getting cynical towards the whole effort. It's hard to reconcile
my son putting everything on the line over there.
