Updated: Alabama Gets Voter Supression Right

Alabama has followed its voter ID requirement that went into effect last year with closing drivers license offices in eight of 10 counties with majority black voting populations. The voter suppression effect is complemented by raising the fee for driver license renewal from $23.50 to $36.25 earlier this year.

Updated to include more information below the orange squiggle.

According to John Archibald at al.com:

Take a look at the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters. That's Macon, Greene, Sumter, Lowndes, Bullock, Perry, Wilcox, Dallas, Hale, and Montgomery, according to the Alabama Secretary of State's office. Alabama, thanks to its budgetary insanity and inanity, just opted to close driver license bureaus in eight of them. All but Dallas and Montgomery will be closed.

Closed. In a state in which driver licenses or special photo IDs are a requirement for voting.

    ...

Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one.

As explained by al.com's Kyle Whitmire:

On Wednesday, the [Alabama Law Enforcement Agency] announced that it would close 31 offices throughout the state, leaving 29 counties without a place where 16-year-olds can take a driver's test, whether they pass on the first try or not.

    That's an inconvenience.

But there's something bigger happening here.

In 2011, Alabama lawmakers approved the state's voter ID law, making it illegal to vote in Alabama without a government-issued photo ID.

    For most folks, that's a driver's license.

In those 29 counties you might be able to register at the courthouse, but you won't be able to cast a ballot there unless you have that ID.

Closing these offices comes as part of a larger overall slashing of the state budget but that is hardly the point. Blacks have been disproportionately impacted by the closures and it is highly unlikely that no-one recognized that before pressing "Go" on the decision. Welcome to the new Jim Crow.

Here in CA, our auto fees have been going up.  Obviously, they must be trying to suppress my vote

Did they also tell you that licenses are not available in your county?

Did they close license facilities in the counties with largest numbers of Anglos in them as well?

Data shows transactions performed in each of the locations they are closing accounted for less than 5% of Alabama Driver License transactions performed. The busiest of the locations performed less than 2,000 transactions in 2014. Implementation of technology-based services including online renewals and statewide equipment upgrades announced in July, will allow Probate Judges and License or Revenue Commissioners to renew STAR IDs and conduct other services that were previously only performed at Driver License Offices. Alabama issues an average of 1.2 million driver licenses each year.

Guess who lacks the ability to get online to get a new license.
If you renew your license, it is easy.
To get a new one, you mu=st take a driving test, and this cannot be done online.
The intent is clearly to discriminate against Blacks, who vote for Democrats.  Alabama has among the most ignorant Republican senators and representatives in the country.

OMG...someone may have to drive 10 or 15 miles every 8 years!
This is yet another reason Blacks should fight the illegal flood.
Illegals are burdening our gvt infrastructure, draining funds, causing budget shortfalls=closing gvt offices

Blacks in Alabama  can vote for Republicans, but they do not. The one thing that everyone knows about every state legislature is who lives where and how they vote.
I can't think of any reason why a Black person would votes for Jefferson Beauregard Sessions and Richard Shelby, two ultraconservatives who bear between then the names of THREE Confederate generals.

It can be more than 15 miles to drive to a different country to get a driver's license. Look at a map of Alabama. Public transportation is nonexistent in rural Alabama.

This was clearly done to prevent Blacks from voting.

Alabama is so broke they have to close a lot of DMV offices.

That is too bad, I have relations in those areas.

They probably can't solve this by reopening these offices , nor by changing the law.

I have been thinking on this a couple of days.

Can they make a DMV office mobile?

An office in a truck and a couple of busses could make a circuit of the underserved area and become more accessible than they ever were before.
