The purpose of a university education is not to protect one's self or others against gun nuts, but it is pretty obvious that if there are people on campus that are armed, they certainly should received some training.

Agreed.
Some of the Graduates will become police officers , some will join the military, so regular classes in small arms could be usefull to some careers , and good grades in these classes would depend on carring the wepons in a way approved by the dean and the training staff the colledge hires.

This group of staff and students would be a well regulated militia by any definition I can think of.

I can think of how it might fit the definition, and also of how it might not. It would depend entirely on what the group was taught.

Why teach it poorly?

I agree that no one is likely to WANT to teach anything poorly, but that does not eliminate the possibility.

For centuries, biology and genetics were taught with no mention of DNA or RNA.

Is teaching small arms not at all better than the potential for teaching it poorly?

There has been no need at all to teach students at universities to stroll about armed with guns thus far. I suppose it is better that they are trained if they are armed, but carrying guns about is the issue. I would certainly prefer that students not carry guns with them.

a) it's not a mandate that anyone carry
b) they'll be carried concealed, so no one will know who has them
c) for those that chose to get a CCW, they'll need to have training

Again, students on campus with guns is a BAD idea.

Again, students on campus with guns is a BAD idea.

It happens very naturally whenever someone wants to commit mayhem on campus student or not.

There is nothing about a gun free zone that prevents mayhem.

Again, bad guys with guns on a gun free campus, is a FAR WORSE idea

Preventing the bad guys from getting on campus is preferable to having lots of guys with guns cruising around.

There is a reason why soldiers are not allowed to wear sidearms at the Pentagon and other military bases.

Preventing the bad guys from getting on campus is preferable to having lots of guys with guns cruising around.

The former requires the school to be a fortress.  The latter is far more cost effective, doable, and statistically proven to be a deterrent

There is a reason why soldiers are not allowed to wear sidearms at the Pentagon and other military bases.

There is a reason that places like the Pentagon & military bases HAVE armed security ON the premises, and not needing to call 911 and wait 5 to 10 minutes for someone with a gun to arrive.

But cudos on painting all the military as some group of unstable gun nuts.  I'm sure they'd be greatly appreciative
