Basically the same thing that will happen if we wait. The Iraqis will decide who runs Iraq. Iran as a large, wealthy and well armed neighbor, will exert some influence in favor of their fellow Shiites. The Turks will get nervous about the autonomous Kurds. The Sunnis will try to enlist money and support from fellow Sunnis. Syria, as a puny, weak neighbor will have less influence. Some Iraqis will kill other Iraqis.

Juniorbush and Cheney will bitch and moan about how whoever caused the "early withdrawal" robbed them of certain victory.

Drudge, Rush and Hannity will agree with them will agree.

Several people will write books and appear on talk shows a lot.

Depends on whether we withdrew prematurely.

I have to suppose that anytime we withdraw from Iraq there will be jubilation in the ranks of our enemy's , even a withdrawal on the best possible terms for us.

But there is no reason worth staying forever, if our purpose cannot be accomplished , there will be a time to cut losses no matter how great the loss is at that point .

Do  know how long it should or will take to make the government of Iraq self sustaining?

If eighteen months is enough then our withdrawal will be the beginning of a heroic struggle within Iraq between the elements of democracy and corruption and racism and  fanaticism.

If eighteen months is not enough then our withdrawal will be the beginning of an awful anarchic period of struggle between the forces of corruption and racism and fanaticism

The basic problem is Juniorbush started the war prematurely.

It would have been better had it not been started at all.

It seems to me that within 18 months it will become clear whether there is any chance of anything remotely resembling 'victory', because this surge, if it happens, will be the last surge, unless Muqtada Al Sadr or some equally annoying Sunni sends some commandos over to blow up the Statue of Liberty or something dire like that.

Do you suppose they would still like to?
