I`ve always questioned the use of biofeuls

and also I`m old enough to remember the introduction of MTBE into gas.

it`s the same story but with alot more money being spent

The utility of biofuels depends on (a) the biofuel in question and (b) what you grow to make it.

Ethanol and methanol have less energy in them, and are less efficient than biodiesel.
Soybeans are a poor way to make either ethanol or biodiesel. Sugar cane ands oil palms are the most efficient, except for making fuel from agricultural biproducts, such as orange peels, cornshucks and such .

not sure if it`s npr or not
but right at this very moment thiers a talk about using algea to make crude oil
stating not agro-food product is used to make it.
it can be made anywhere.
and cars need no modifications to use it.
he state oil is made from algea to begin with but it took a very long process
this company has been able to greatly shorten the time.

this  adds to what I just learned today
but here something else i learned on npr
the guest said he is producing light sweet crude oil from algea
meaning the oil companies will not try to shut him down
because as time goes on oil companies will have spent billions to upgrade refineries to handles non-sweet crude
so the algea process actually helps oil companies save money.
