90%?
« on: December 12, 2010, 09:01:26 PM »
Did I hear that correctly on 60 Minutes?

90% of the roads of Brazil are not paved roads?

90%?

Hey with that country's growth lets invest in concrete suppliers
and road building companies that will take on the task.

BT I said the exact same words at the end of that segment....the EXACT same words!

IMO ...they edit a lot of that out if thats a major democrat.....but hey thats the world we live in.

They tried to make him look a bit kooky.

But he will keep a low profile....so it wont matter.

The roads in the outback of Brazil are gravel, mostly, and occasionally oiled gravel. In the rainy season, many of them turn to soup. Most of the population in Brazil lives along the Atlantic coast. There are roads that connect the inland cities, and these are the ones that are unpaved. There are bus lines that use these roads, even though they are unpaved. The rivers are used for much of the freight.

Highways in South America are asphalt, not cement. There are very few cement roads in Argentina, Uruguay or Paraguay. Asphalt or macadam roads are the standard. Concrete is best for places that freeze, but nowhere in Brazil, Uruguay or most of Argentina freezes. Brazil is a tropical country.

There is a market for cement, as they use it for buildings. They also make a sort of red clay brick the size of cement blocks that is used for construction.

BT I am wondering whats up with that site....

How could China have a higher percentage of paved roads than the United States?

Hell most people in China dont even own a car!

Tell what I am missing?

China:
Totals roadways in kms:1,930,544 km
Total Paved roadways:  1,575,571 km

US:
Totals roadways in kms: 6,433,272 km
Total Paved roadways:  4,209,835 km

We have 3x's the roads and close to 3x's the paved roads but of the roads they do have a higher percentage paved.

gotcha....

here is an interesting stat:

The number of cars per capita remains low in China, there are only 18 cars for every
1,000 people in China, compared to 940 cars for every 1,000 people in the United States

to try and control their huge energy consumption it may be a blessing most Chinese
dont own cars and they can more easily point people towards mass transit...people
that have not had the luxury of owning automobiles are not as likely to fight tooth
and nail to give up driving cars for energy savings....on the other hand China is now
the worlds number one automaker.

I doubt that China will ever have as many cars per capita as the US. China has been a collectivist society since the times of Marco Polo, and China is much more densely populated than the US, which makes public transportation by rail and bus ideal.
