I see these ads here about getting a degree on various stuff and wonder how does one find the legit ones. I`d would try the brick and morter but I got the impression they never complain about lack of students so I`ll give them a break.

You can have it both ways.

Lots of ordinary colledges offer some of their courses online.

I am a few credits from an associates degree, I hope to get on it again soon , most of the hours I have were earned online from a local community colledge.

I visited my professors and audited some classes when things got difficult.

There are a number of schools that allow you access to their online courses for FREE. The catch is, you don't get credit. I would suggest a public school if you want credit. You can backup your studies with these free courses: check out YouTube. There are a lot of fly by night for-profit schools that enroll huge numbers in their expensive classes, and if they have too many, you could have trouble accessing the course. Plus, many of them are not accredited by the serious accreditation organizations.
