Would I or wouldn't I what?

Would you feel great about sending a ten year old
son on over-night campouts with Catholic Priests?

What is your very first thought when you think about that?

Come on...be honest!

You know what it is.

And for good reason.

It's called gut instinct based on some empirical data.

if someone called a typical American parent and said:

"hey we want your son to join Boy Scout Troop 712 on a campout this weekend"

vs

"hey we want you son to join some Catholic Priests & other young boys
for an overnight campout this weekend"

There is no doubt a different set of things would go off in the typical parents head.

All Muslims aren't terrorist and all Catholic Priests are not homo molesters.

But based on empirical data both categories have a huge problem within their midst
which naturally give people concern.

One of my scoutmasters was a RC priest. Never had a problem with it, nor did my parents.

Ami I was an alter boy and was often in the dressing room changing into the alter boy gown
in very close proximity to priests. I also never had a problem, but unfortunately it appears
many, many young boys during that time period were sexually assaulted by some reckless
sexual predator Catholic priests. I think sometimes the sexual predator priests knew which
kids were vulnerable and picked them as their victims. If there were homo predator priests
around me back then they probably knew who my Dad was and they knew he was very close
with his children and would be up at the rectory having a face to face with any priests acting
inappropriately around his children. Any priest bothering me would have seen a very, very
angry Irishman at their door within minutes. Normally that Irishman was a happy-go-lucky kind
of guy, but mess with his kids and there was hell to pay.

More likely it's that a very few cases have received more public attention than is deserved.

How many priests in the world? How many have been fingered for violations? I bet the percentage is very, very low.

Well I think this is very, very serious criminal matter and not to be belittled simply
as a "low percentage" anymore than after several airplane crashes should be dismissed as
"well most of the planes that took off lately landed safely".

Almost every Catholic diocese in the United States has been involved in these crimes
against children that are in the multi-thousands. Over 10K people in the US made allegations
of child sexual abuse involving Catholic clergy.

Plus there is more than just the sexual crime itself, it also involves a pattern
by the church hierarchy of "cover-up" and/or "looking the other way" by simply
transferring these sexual monsters to other churches.

Another thing to consider is "how many never came forward"?
IMO the number of victims is much higher, but they have been shamed into silence.

In the US alone more than $2.5 billion in compensation has been paid
to victims. A significant number of cases have also been reported in Australia,
New Zealand, Canada, and countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Sure the percentage of all abuser Cathloic priests is probably about the same
as the general population, but it is still a huge billion dollar and moral problem
for this sub-group (Catholics) of the general population.
