More likely it's that a very few cases have received more public attention than is deserved.
How many priests in the world? How many have been fingered for violations?
I bet the percentage is very, very low.
Well I think this is very, very serious criminal matter and not to be belittled simply
as a "low percentage" anymore than after several airplane crashes should be dismissed as
"well most of the planes that took off lately landed safely".
Almost every Catholic diocese in the United States has been involved in these crimes
against children that are in the multi-thousands. Over 10K people in the US made allegations
of child sexual abuse involving Catholic clergy.
Plus there is more than just the sexual crime itself, it also involves a pattern
by the church hierarchy of "cover-up" and/or "looking the other way" by simply
transferring these sexual monsters to other churches.
Another thing to consider is "how many never came forward"?
IMO the number of victims is much higher, but they have been shamed into silence.
In the US alone more than $2.5 billion in compensation has been paid
to victims. A significant number of cases have also been reported in Australia,
New Zealand, Canada, and countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
Sure the percentage of all abuser Cathloic priests is probably about the same
as the general population, but it is still a huge billion dollar and moral problem
for this sub-group (Catholics) of the general population.
