Suspected smuggling boat stopped off Oceanside

OCEANSIDE — Federal authorities intercepted a panga boat carrying 23 suspected illegal immigrants off the coast of Oceanside early Friday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers patrolling the coast in a boat stopped the 25-foot panga about 1:40 a.m. about 6 1/2 miles off the coast and detained the suspected illegal immigrants until a Coast Guard cutter arrived to transport them, authorities said.

The 18 males and five females aboard the wooden fishing boat were all wearing life jackets and appeared to be in good health, according to Coast Guard spokeswoman Jetta Disco.

One man was arrested by Customs and Border Protection officers, and the remaining 22 were taken to Shelter Island and handed over to the Department of Homeland Security’s Maritime Task Force for questioning.

Two illegal immigrants died in January off the coast of Torrey Pines when their overloaded panga capsized. The deaths highlighted the increasing trend of sea-smuggling in the region over the past few years.
