Ahhhh......somehow I thought there was going to be some relevance to the point of the thread.  Oh well

That was relevant.

This old whiskerado sounds like the inventor of the unpaid intern.
If he is still around , he should ask for royalties from those corporations large and small that have institutionalized this practice.

As far as I know this unpaid intern thing is only widespread in recent history. It seems to be not only a way to cheat the intern but also a way to dodge the minimum wage law long enough to make the young workers efforts worth something before he ever gets payment at all.

Although I have heard a lot about guys not ever getting paid at all.

The relevance was that there are creeps that think they can take advantage of kids by paying them nothing.

He was in his 70's in the early 60's, he has long gone to deadbeat heaven.

I agree he had a bad attitude, I can even recall a scripture that refers to this behavior.

Must not be a new problem.

It is bad to cheat someone of their wages.
Is it a lot better to eliminate the job entirely?

The relevance was that there are creeps that think they can take advantage of kids by paying them nothing.

And the kid then has the option to go work elsewhere     ::)

If you want evidence that this is so , just try to remember back when the miniwage was low, and how many American teens worked summers at harvest, pumping gas, gathering turpentine and throwing hay. Jobs you can't find a teen doing here anymore, it just is too hard to find such a job and if you do the dollars you get are not worth the time.

Yes Plane you are correct and it got kids to begin their work habits...to learn about work
I started as a dishwasher after freshman year in high school
I also mowed some lawns during the day
It was a good learning experience of dealing with work, bosses, co-workers, customers
Instead of like today's kids sitting on a sofa playing video games & texting on a cell phone
Many of those type jobs are now done by illegals
Another unqualified cost of the illegal invasion...stripping our youth of early job training

The kid is told again and again that he still lacks experience, and that he will be paid just any day now.

Kids who were educated to believe what adults tell them can be fooled for quiet a long time.

It's called learning.  If the kid isn't going to ask get substantive answers from the parents, that's not the rare bogus employer's fault, when there are so many other jobs out there

Apparently.

I also had parents who helped educate me in when a "boss" was taking advantage of my work, which left me the option of leaving, if that were the case.  Not to mention a dad who could "communicate" that issue with the "boss"

I was fully adult when I took an under the table job hanging sheet rock.

I learned soooo much about sheet rock, there are a lot of tricks .

One thing I learned was that the guy that spreads the mud is the skilled one , and makes as much as half the rest of the crew. He can get this money by demanding it , the lower skill jobs are easy to replace , a guy that is good and fast with the putty knife is worth more because this is a rarer skill.

Then I learned that it is common for under the table job workers to not get that last paycheck.

What "does not"?  You're not making any sense.  Although that's kind of redundant
