Title: Tech Question/Poll to BT and others
Post by: Christians4LessGvt on February 23, 2010, 10:02:12 PM
I continue to get viruses on my computer
not all the time...but often enough to be a pain.
maybe a bad one twice a year....minor ones every 3 months or so

I have tried MalwareBytes, AVAST, McAfee, Adaware, AVG, ect...
I do the updates, I do the scheduled scans, ect
and yeah they work most of the time.....but

So I took my laptop to two different places yesterday and both said
"you need to be on Mozilla FireFox...it's much safer"

I tried Mozilla FireFox today and it seemd ok...still kind of just trying it out

So here is the point of this post....

HOW MANY OF YOU USE MOZILLA FIREFOX AS YOUR PRIMARY BROWSER?

HOW DO YOU LIKE IT?

DO YOU STILL GET VIRUSES/TROJANS?

DO YOU MISS SOME THINGS ABOUT IE?

I use Firefox almost exclusively. I cannot think of a single thing about IE that I miss. No virus problems to speak of.

was one of the main reasons you switched due to virus security?

also what the hell do these bozos get out of creating a virus?

i'm not sure I get it....they dont even know or see their victims....nor do they make money?

I've used Firefox for years and have no virus problems either -- knock on wood. Use Avast too.

one of the techs told me yesterday that Firefox is safer beacause it does not use "Active X"
whatever that means

I'm transitioning to Chrome myself, and recently invested in a Vipre Anti-Virus protection software

not sure why it's safer but according to the guys that wear pocket protectors it is better and safer than IE so I use it and don't have any virus issues.

I used both ,but mostly mozilla.
if i understand active x , that requires you to open your security to certain site
which may make you more vulnerable to attacks.

i switch from nortan to avg a few months ago and been incident free

the problem with most anti-virus businesses is they make money when you get attacked and need to pay for extra services.

so very few will attempt complete coverage.
ex. nortan wanted me to pay for malware removel because thats extra.

I`m pretty sure most folks who buy anti-virus don`t wants partial coverage

hey! I wear a pocket protector AND horn rimmed glasses
my niece refuses to stand next to me when I do that

kimba I asked the tech geek if they had "Rush" service available?
he said no....
i can't imagine not offering a rush level of service
but the place seemed pretty good
so i left my laptop for "up to 4 days" to be fixed

I know crap about computers, but what exactly is wrong with your computer?

is it the same problem or different everytime?

unrelated do you do standard maintenance stuff?
ex. defrag

this may sound simple but 60% of people I ask don`t know that word

I've switched mostly to Chrome.

I've considered using Chrome, though I like the customization Firefox allows. Is Chrome significantly better in performance?

For many things, yes. And the ability to customize Chrome is growing. One of the best features is that if one tab or window gets hung, the rest all continue to work.

I use AVG free and Firefox, and have found Avira (free version) to be useful in finding anything that AVG misses. If you use them both, you must load Avira last: AVG will not work with Avira in place.

I think that IE is a lot more unsafe because those who write viruses tend to write them for IE. Nearly every really annoying virus I have gotten has been while using IE.

exactly

IE will always be the biggest target ,since it the most used.

but as mozilla gets more popular it`ll get more attacks.

but it is interesting about anti-viruses.
what is the reason for it?
ex. malware will make a popup that you need thier services, but never fixes the problem.

I kinda doubt they makes the big bucks with this scam

The guys designing the malware seek to rip off people once. They probably have a program that they downloaded and altered that will locate other malware. Then they offer to scan your system for free (usually after telling you that you have one malware program that they put on your computer). I imagine that a certain number of chumps will pay them the $29.95 or whatever for their bogus malware removal program, and it takes a while for the scam to become apparent. By then they are long gone and have moved to another address. It seems pretty clear that they are in it for the money.

In addition to XO's explanation - which is one of the reasons for creating malware - the other two main reasons are:

tell me if I`m wrong

when I get a suspected malware I`d go to my program files look for anything that got added and delete it.

sometime I use search to find anything with the same name(ex, malware defender) so I can remove it.

it seems to work.

please tell me if this is lame

I have removed several malware programs by writing down the name3s of the malware and then reading what it says about it on the Internet. Often you can find directions for removal. Sometimes it is as simple as finding a 1 in the Registry and changing it to 0. This require that you look up the specific item and their location in the registry first.

NEVER pay the people who first informed you of the malware. Odds are (a) it won't work, and you will have lost your money, and (2) there is a free or cheaper program that WILL work. Avira is especially good, but downloading the free version requires that you look CAREFULLY at each page before you get to the download.

oh yes
very very important
always keep a notepad handy near a computer.
this has always been useful in so many ways.
it seems obvious but very few people do this.

kimba my last poll indicated that 82% have notepads by their desktop PC but only 29% have them next to their laptops.

I missed that one
I totally believe about the laptop.
I`m guessing it has something to do about a different type of user.
desktop and laptop has differing usage

ex. my laptop is more used for work than desktop .

I caught this one late.  I've been using Firefox for about a year now, no virus problems at all.  My ISP includes antivirus programming as part of the service, which happened around the time when I switched from IE to Firefox so it's hard to tell which is responsible for my freedom from viruses and annoying pop-ups.

"I know crap about computers, but what exactly is wrong with your computer?"

I got a Trojan while watching a YouTube video.
The tech said it may have not been the Youtube video but an ad on that page
It is the Trojan that pretends to be scanning your computer, but is actually the virus.
I've got a version of it before.
It basically shuts down your sytem....system restore doesnt work
and it prevents most virus scans from finishing

so yeah the evil that produce something like this need to
be jailed for 1st offense and executed upon 2nd offense!

is it the same problem or different everytime?

It's usually different...

unrelated do you do standard maintenance stuff?
ex. defrag

Yes I do clean out cookies, and defrag

this may sound simple but 60% of people I ask don`t know that word

LOL...true

They don't have icons defined.

If you have mozilla / firefox, install adblocker plus as a add-on, and select one of the comprehensive block lists. That will filter out most of your malicious sites.

Ami...forgive me...but what does that mean?

My favorites/Bookmarks are like Drudge, Ebay, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, ect...

And e-Bay icon is showing nxt to the bookmark, Myspace icon is showing, Facebook icon is showing, Youtube icon is showing, Yahoo icon is showing, but like Debka icon is not showing, Drudge icon is not showing, my own company icon is not showing....

but they all show when I look at my Favorities/Bookmark on IE.....why are some showing on FireFox and some not?
Title: Re: Tech Question/Poll to BT and others

Ami...forgive me...but what does that mean?

There are meta tags in the HTML header for icons. IE uses one set (defined by Microsoft) while Mozilla / Firefox use the tags defined in the HTML spec. The companies that have icons in IE but not Firefox are using the Microsoft "standard" instead of the real standard. Some companies define their icons using both sets of specs so that it shows up everywhere, but this is actually bad as it leads to bloated web pages. Microsoft should use the standard that everyone else uses instead of making up their own.

AMI.....

so if my own company icon is not showing up in Firefox I need to ask my tech guy to "define our icon using both sets of specs"? Hell I wonder how many of our customers might be using Firefox and our icon is not showing up? I mean it's not a killer....but heck.....it's better to have the icon there.
