Apparently ,you are not defeated untill you admit that you are.

For strictly military reasons, it would be foolish for Isreal to give back the Golan Heights. Plus, much of Isreal's water comes from there.

It is a done deal. Get over it.

I wouldn't dispute the first part of what you wrote and you may have put your finger on a key element in the dispute, water.  (Although I thought the headwaters of the Litani River, which are the only source I know about, are in Lebanon.   I stand to be corrected on that.)  But water rights are negotiable.  They can be resolved by force of arms, but that is not likely to remain a permanent solution to the problem until one side gives up on being able to win a contest of arms.     For the Syrians, that moment hasn't come yet.  Personally I think they'd be weak and foolish to concede defeat so early in the game.  The wheel's still in spin, as Bob Dylan puts it.

No, it isn't. Syria has never turned over the Golan to Israel. It was rarely a part of ancient Israel.

I doubt that it will remain in Israeli hands forever.

Syria is run by incompetent, dictatorial fools. Perhaps this will not be the case forever.

At the moment, it appears that Israel is run by incompetent elected fools.

Juniorbush and the wonder-working Condi do not seem to have been much use in the Israeli conflict.

Condi didn't like Al Fatah, and rather than wait for  things to change after Arafat croaked, she insisted on elections. Hamas won, much to her surprise. Now Palestine has a civil war in Gaza.

Clinton tried, but they have been singularly incompetent. Things are worse than ever.

When Syria had the Golan, they used the elevation to their advantage and frequently shelled Northern Isreal.

For this and other military reasons such as the direct route to Damascus, Isreal should never give it up.

I am pretty sure that there are some mountains in Canada where the Canucks could shell the US as well.

Israel does not have the right to invade Damascus, by the way.

Wait and see, eventually Israel will get out of the Golan.

And US taxpayers will once again be called on to pay some huge amount to bribe the settlers to leave.

Generally, so far as Israel and Syria are concerned, I would say a pox on both their houses.

If Canada has used these hills this way then takeing them oer might be a good idea for us.

There is a reason why part of Minnesota cannot be driven into except from Canada, you know.

I was thinking of mountains a bit farther west: in Montana and Idaho, for example.

I was only being facetious. Little did I know that Plane would think this to be a good idea.

There is a small peninsula community here in Washington where the only way you can drive there is through Canada (Pt. Roberts).  In addition, there are several trailheads in the N. Cascades only easily accesible through BC, unless you want a 45 mile canoe/kayak trip up Ross Lake.

Why wouldn't I think it a good idea?

We don't need to because Canadians are not bellicose in the present , when we did  need to, we fought Canadians at Fallen Timbers.

Good neighbors hardly need good fences , sorry Robert Frost.
