Amnesia About Republican Spending

 Anne Applebaum, Slate
George W. BushHistorical amnesia is at once the most endearing and the most frustrating of American qualities. On the one hand, it means that"”F. Scott Fitzgerald to the contrary"”there really are second acts in American lives. People can move somewhere else, reinvent themselves, start again. On the other hand, our inability to remember what our policy was last week"”never mind last decade"”drives outsiders crazy. We forget that we supported the dictator before we decided to destroy him. Then we can't understand why others,...

Robo, you evaded the facts that I posted.  You copied something that does not answer the question nor the defend the myths.
How can raising taxes help those that are already hurting.  No matter how you look at it, rich or poor, if you raise taxes on them, they have less cash, less spending power, less consumer confidence, less money to the small business man, less money at the malls, less purchasing power, and in the long run, less taxes to the federal government.
Even one of the Democrats heroes (JFK) made it very clear that raising taxes is harmful to the economy and he lowered taxes.

I agree the article was total nonsense. But the author does have a point. It's unseemly for the GOP to point fingers at the dems when their management of the budget during the Bush years was just as reckless.

The bigger question is what have we as a nation come to expect from our governments, and by that i mean local, state and federal. And how are those expectations to be paid for? And if the cost is too great, what are we willing to settle for?

I think it's a safe bet that most, if not a huge majority of Conservatives were completely put off by the GOP spending under Bush II.  It's one of the biggest reasons they lost their majority.

Now, if they can practice what they preach, they can expect to maintain majority status for some time, given that poll after poll demonstrates that this country has more conservatives than liberals.

IF

So, no amnesia from this Conservative

Now, if  they can practice what they preach....

Saying you are for lower taxes smaller government etc etc is one thing, implementing the sermon is quite another.

What services would you cut at the local level?

What services would you cut at the state level?

And finally what services would you cut at the federal level?

10% cut on all agencies, including the heart wrenching ones.  Start at the top, work your way down.
No more added pork to any legislation.  All spending to be totally transparent.
If need be, cut in wages to everyone in government jobs that make over a certain dollar amount.  I say this, because someone making 30,000 should not have a wage cut.  But so many make nearly 150k-200k for their work that state government pays for, i/e tax payers.
Have you ever looked at the wages of school administrators or sports specialists in the public school systems?  OUT OF CONTROL!!

Cut salaries across the board, enough of this unequal treatment of people because of what they earn. You want a better paying job, put together a better resume.

Used to be you went to work for the govt, not because of the pay but because of the job security and the benefits. And i don't see why govt employees don't contribute to social security like everyone else.

No, if you collect SSI, you pay SSI.  That I agree.  But there are some government jobs that pay nearly min. wage.  I would rather see people making 25k or less, not to be taxed (other than SSI), then to give them huge welfare checks once every year because they are poor.
I have known many people who received 2-5K in earned income, and what do they do?  Ex: go to Disneyland.  No job, unemployed, bills outstanding, two kids, car falling apart, and they earned, Disneyland.  This is one example of poor managment of tax dollars.
Give them a bit more on each paycheck, but not a welfare check.
Also, if you receive monthly checks, you do monthly volunteer work for the city or government.  (if physically able)
I guarantee you that will end many welfare abuses..

if that is what the jobs are worth then that is what they should be paid at.

And let's do away with the earned income tax credit.
