They say Tyler Truitt is creating an unsafe living condition by living off-the-grid, yet he says he's being cost-conscious.

The problem, Schrimsher says, is not the environmental alternative, but that Truitt didn’t go through the permitting process which includes getting a variant.

Something Truitt says he was denied, after an inspector issued a citation.

"We had intended to petition for a variant. Why should a citizen be forced to apply for a variant in order to comply with an ordinance that was unconstitutional to begin with?," Truitt told WAAY 31.

The city suggests that if you want to "go green" by living off-the-grid you go to the community development office, building department, and planning department to make sure your building is up to code and you get permission.

Huntsville Alabama is unfriendly to trailers and living without utility hookups.

I bet that if you manage to get a variance , you have spent enough on the project to buy a second trailer , which would make the lot into a trailer park , which IS allowed.

I understand that living off the grid takes commitment and parsimoniousness, but does city hall need to make it impossible?

(Parsimoniousness; and spellchecker bought it, I don't know whether to be proud of myself or of spellchecker.)

I am pretty sure that whoever runs Huntsville is no fan of Hillary's.
I think any city has an obligation to ensure that any dwelling has a way of dealing with sewage produced on the property.

The post does not show his trailer, just an empty lot with solar panels, a car a truck and a riding lawnmower.

As for using solar panels rather than an electrical hookup, I am all for that.

Tyler tells more detail.

Do you believe that a city should have unlimited rights to mess with you?

Well I don't expect an absolute answer.

But where should the limits be on the rights of the city to tell you what you must do?

If he built a house there perhaps the city would condescend to hook up some water.

I was raised in a house that had a septic tank, is that backwards now?

My Mother grew up in a house that collected rainwater in a cistern, I hope it hasn't shortened her lifespan , she is only eighty.

I really think that the rights of a city to tell its residents what to do needs limits more than the rights of a person to do as he wants need limits.

When the city takes your rights , they should bear a burden of due process, and not a small one.

Septic tanks are adequate in most places. I can see why plumbing would need to be up to code to get connected to municipal water.

Huntsville is in a hurricane zone. It is reasonable to require structures more substantial than trailers. In a windstorm, bits of trailer tend to blow about and can damage other people's homes.

I don't see where being in the military grants him special privileges, other than a VA loan.

So Colorado Florida and Texas also make it illegal to live off of rainwater or without electrical hookup or with composting toilet or even making it illeagal to camp on ones own land.

None of our ancestors had electrical service before 1900 , a lot of our families didn't have these utility hookups before the 50s.

Trailers seem to be the real point, if a millionaire installed a composting toilet in his mansion I doubt anyone would bother about it.

But if the zoning commission of the city decides that they want the city to be entirely high class , first thing to do is get rid of everything affordable.

No, Huntsville is nearer the border of Tennessee than the shore of the sea.

This seems fetched from far, if a tornado were to strike , what sort of building is not going to produce flying debris?

I think that Huntsville is trying to rid itself of low rent property, they might as well outlaw poverty and bus all the poor out of state.

One of the problems Tyler Truitt must have , but has not been mentioned in the resources I have found , is that the constitution  of Alabama is a terrible mess, you really don't learn what rights you have by reading it.

....Or attempting to read it, it is a real mess.
