Assad is not deliberately monstrous: he does not go i for public beheadings or the sale of captured women,
but he is plenty cruel. He should have stepped down long ago. I assume he swore some sort of oath and is
obsessed with staying in power.

same with Castro and his brother?

Of COURSE it is different. Castro is not dropping bombs on his people, there is no rebellion in Cuba. There is no real comparison at all.
Assad was incompetent and could not control his country.  Castro has managed to give Cubans enough of what they want to allow him to stay in power.

Do not assume that you know more than I do about Cuba. I lived with a Cuban woman for four years and she made four trips back to La Habana and returned before she decided to stay. She certainly got enough to eat, she lost no weight in Cuba and only complained about the difficulty of finding salt and decent mayonnaise. I know all about how Cubans live in Miami and how they live in Cuba, and you, phony Christhain, do not know diddly-squat.

Cuba is a hell hole....whining ass country...."oh we are poor because of the US"....Oh bullshit....why does Cuba's destiny depend on anyone but Cuba?......Cuba is poor because of Cuba and the poor decisions their leaders have made....Assad is being attacked by outside forces...by proxy militias of foreigners....thankfully President Putin is not going to allow doofus Obama to turn Syria into Libya.

Nonetheless, Cuba is not Syria. The people are not in revolt. The Cubans who want Castro to leave the most are in Miami.
You have not been there, and we know from your inane comments that your sources of information are poor and limited.

Syria is vastly worse right now than Libya. It has about five times the population, to start with.
And the the overthrow of Qaddafi and the attempted overthrow of Assad are President Obama's fault.

The rebellion in Libya was set off by the overthrow of the government of Tunisia.
The revolt against Assad started because of a major drought in the farmlands of Syria, perhaps caused by climate change. Assad did nothing. Thanks to Juniorbush;s idiotic invasion of Iraq, Syrians had access to a serious number of weapons.

Russia eludes US ban on NATO airspace by roundabout route to Syria via Iraq and Iran

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

September 9, 2015

Moscow has opened a new roundabout route for its ongoing military airlift from Sevastopol in Crimea and other bases in southern Russia to the Syrian Mezze Airbase in Damascus, DEBKAfile's exclusive military and intelligence sources disclose.

This route runs over the Caspian Sea and northern Iran and Iraq and terminates with deliveries at Damascus and the new Russian air and ground base at Jablah, near the Syrian port of Latakia.

The Russians have in this way circumvented the strong US applications to Turkey, Greek, Bulgaria and Cyprus, to close their airspace to Russian shipments for its military buildup in Syria.

Washington's actions had two results one less and the other more desirable.

1. Tehran and Baghdad have both been pulled into directly supporting the Russian military intervention in Syria, after Iraq was bullied by Iran to turn down the US request to close its northern skies to Russian shipments.

Washington refrained from addressing this request to Iran, in keeping with its policy of avoiding strains on relations until the nuclear deal was endorsed in Washington and Tehran.

As a result, heavy Russian transports are flying over parts of Iraq where US forces, including ground intelligence teams for guiding US air strikes against ISIS, are deployed. This makes accidental collisions in the sky a real danger. The Americans have therefore slowed down their aerial war on ISIS.

2.  The need for a roundabout air route to Syria has substantially raised the cost of the Russian military expedition. A direct flight over the Mediterranean spans 1,025 km, which the Russian AN-124 (Condor) can cover in two hours. The long way round is three times as long  more than 2,900 km and takes six hours.

Washington's challenge to Moscow over air routes to Syria is their first military confrontation over Syria and the new Russian military buildup.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest warned Tuesday night, Sept. 8: "The Russian military buildup would risk confrontation with the counter-ISIL coalition that included the United States."

He was repeating a similar warning issued a few days ago by Secretary of State John Kerry.
Explicit American threats of a military showdown with Russia over the Middle East is the sort of language not heard for four decades since the 1973 Yom Kippur War which Israel fought against Egypt and Syria.
