Title: Almost new news
Post by: Plane on May 10, 2016, 04:52:31 AM
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/air-force-wants-lasers-on-large-planes-by-2022/ar-BBsOLgs?li=BBnb7Kz

This was really accomplished ten   years   ago.

But the aircraft used to carry the Laser weapon was a 747.

If we are ready to place them on a C-130 then they are getting more practical for tactical. The C-130 is only an hundred feet long.

Ridiculous things get said, like shielding with smoke.
What size smoke cloud would shield an aircraft at altitude , or a ballistic missile in flight?

This is not the weapon for ground attack in the first place , smoke as a defense is a non starter.

I shudder to think what this will cost.

  What does a city cost?

North Korea will quite soon have the ability to destroy an American city , they have already the ability to destroy Some South Korean and Japanese cities.

Of course, destroying a few cities against an enemy that you cannot weaken is a boneheaded move , but North Korea is the home of much boneheadedness.

Our weakening ourselves is another species of boneheadedness, but the result is very similar.

Being as North Korea has been run by blustering fanatics for the past SEVENTY ONE (71) years, and has not seriously attacked anyone since 1953, I do not see them as much of threat.

The military cannot resist new toys. They will always find some excuse for  wanting them. I suppose a laser in a huge hulking unstealthy cargo plane might serve a purpose,if it works. A lot of their crap is just a waste of money.

Eisenhower was the last president that actually stood up to the military industrial complex. JFK may have tried, but he did not succeed. The amount wasted on useless weapons and  other junk has never even been published.

They do not regret the attack they made in 1953, matter of fact they are busy telling each other that we attacked them and they heroically beat us.

They do not regret the hundreds of Koreans and Japanese that they have assassinated or kidnapped they do not regret bombing ambassadors or temples.

They are not even sorry that they have sunk South Korean ships and captured an American ship.

What would they have to do , that would impress you as an act of war?

What if they dug tunnels as wide as highways to bypass defenses with troops and equipment?

The fact remains that North Korea has not posed a major threat to the US since the end of the Korean War.

All they need now is a ballistic vehicle to make them one.  They haven't been working on rockets or boosters as of late, correct?

The US has all manner of weapons that it has not and probably never will use. And we claim to need them for our defense.

Not the point now is it.  Is NK actively working on a long range rocket, or not?

Is the US not working to upgrade its weapons?

North Korea is playing monkey see, monkey do.

Let's try this again...is NK working on a long range rocket/missile system?  It really is a yes or no question

No, means they're not a threat

Yes, means they are

If your point is that North Korea could not destroy us utterly , I will grant that is probably right.

Is it your point also that loosing a small number of cities is no big deal and no reason to be upset with North Korea, I think I will disagree with you.

North Korea has not been a serious threat. Any attack they launch would be suicidal.

How could the DPRK actually benefit  from attacking the US?

It is not new when a national leader pretends to be insane. Nixon pretended to be insane to the North Vietnamese, after all.

The question is, how does building a large, clumsy laser equipped plane going to protect the US from the DRPK attacking is if Kim Jung Un really IS insane?

Don't they have planes that could shoot it down?

What difference does this make?

There is no potential for a war between N.Korea and the US do come out as a profit for N.Korea. This doesn't seem to matter.

Pretending ? Have they done anything sane in fifty years?

They have planes that could shoot it down for sure. Pretty much any fighter could do that.

Been watching too many Marvel movies.  Currently, there are NO, planes that can just "shoot down a ballistic warhead" coming down

Nope.

There is no aircraft in existence , nor missile , that can down its target at greater range than this weapon.

So what would you shoot at it with?

The laser plane would have to take out all the fighter planes first.

...and which Hollywood movie is that?

One taking place in Plane's mind between huge laser equipped US cargo planes and theoretical North Korean fighters.

reinforcing the point there is no such plane that could actually shoot down a NK nuclear missle, as you originally claimed

The laser plane would have to take out all the fighter planes first.

Not a problem.

For fighters the range is shorter and the speeds are lower and the vulnerability is greater.

Missiles headed into the laser carrying plane would be the toughest target , but these can be burned also.

I expect it would work best to have two or more laser carrying planes so that they could cover each other somewhat. Missiles are much more vulnerable  to laser burn on their sides than on their noses.
