Title: Music
Post by: richpo64 on December 15, 2008, 08:22:08 PM
I've been speding a lot of time watching concert footage on YouTube lately. There's some really good stuff available.

I thought I share a some favorites. Maybe you would like to share some of yours.

My music tastes are best described as eclectic; however, this is the stuff I've been listening to the last week or so:

The female vocalist (Annie Haslam) in the last several vids has an amazing voice - better than 5 octave range and perfect pitch.

Just realized that I posted all female vocalists, so I'd thought I'd balance it out with a few vids of a friend of mine, Charlie Zahm:

Terrific stuff! I got into civil war songs while I lived in Tennessee. I guy I met there knew a lot about them. Since then I've kind of lost touch with that music. If you know what to look for I'd appreciate it greatly.

I've been spending a lot of time "out of work life" listening to youtube videos, as well, Richpo.

Gotta say....they are quite the venue for pleasurable listening......a quick concert in the making, for a recess break. ;)

You bet Cindy. Tom Petty might be one of the most under rated rockers.

Here's some Beatles on the roof top. Their last performance together.

Lennon--"I hope we passed the audition".

Love it.
Snow day here for me....what a glorious day for music. I think I'll take time later to play the piano a bit...or perhaps my classical guitar.

Hey, at least he got some decent air time. Aldo Nova was another under rated rocker, better than Petty (IMHO), and got hardly any air time in the US.

I've heard this Aldo Nova tune. I think it still gets air play on the oldies stations.

Here's one most people who aren't from Cleveland, England or Scotland have never heard of.

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Harvey died in 1982 at the age of 42 of a heart attack.

by and by.....No one can match Tom Petty. He's in a league of his own.

I like Tom Petty. I can't say he's one of my favorites, but he's good.

This is a fantastic version of The End by The Doors, live in Toronto 1967. It's a two parter. If you've got a doobie, fire it up and listen!

As for Country Music, I've got what ami would probably describe as eclectic taste.

This is Wayne "The Train" Hancock. He's best described as Juke Joint Swing. I've seen him hundreds of time.

While I listen to country occasionally, it's gotten very "pop-ish" of late. I usually listen to older country music and bluegrass when I'm in that mood.

Aaaahhh! I graduated in '88! But I fell in love with 70s music in my early 20s. And I continue to listen to anything and everything... except pop country. Like others have mentioned, if I'm going to listen to country, it's going to be classic country.

And I love to discover different things. I stream NPR over here and picked up World Cafe the other day and heard Ray LaMontagne for the first time... love at first listen (not country - folksy). Here's a video:

NPR is about the only American station that allows international streaming anymore. Over the past couple of years I've found it harder and harder to stream anything, generally getting a message that tells me "this media cannot be streamed in your region." The jerks!

However, Amman has 5 full-time English-language radio stations. The problem is that, for the most part, they just play and re-play Top 40 stuff. What I enjoy is that they sometimes bring in UK and European Top 40, which is a bit of a change.

Here's one I LOVE by Sandi Thom. I believe it never made it to the States, but she has a beautiful voice and I can't imagine that anyone would not love the lyrics:

And another by Keane (I love the 80s feeling in this one):

Now that you have a torrent processor running, you can visit sites like Pirate Bay to find music to download.

Indeed, and I have been doing that already. The only thing missing is the "discovery" of flipping through the stations and finding some eclectic program playing tunes from a newer artist (or old one that I am unfamiliar with).

But Ami, question - do you have any knowledge about why streaming is blocked outside of the U.S. (or certain regions)?

BT the Kid Rock fan. Who'd a thunk it.

I saw Kid about six years ago in Cleveland. It was a great show, but all those things you hear about what goes on at his shows is true. There were young girls on guys shoulders with there tops off. To show you how old I am, I'm thinking, "I wonder if I know that girls father."

Here's another favorite. No Doubt (Gwen is hot hot hot). This is a very soulful version of Don't Speak.

Wow, I dig this one. I want to debate/share/invite the lyrics into a place for discussion.....I usually focus more on the music vs the lyrics...as I am a musician classically trained. Beethoven was a man of few words ;)

but, I wish I were  a punk rocker begs me to write ....Love her lyrics, Henny.

Thanks.....

How about when the days of yesteryear were ripe with oranges for dessert and an occasional home baked pie.

Those were the days. Simplicity and fewer choices (except for the ugly Avocado green kitchen appliances ha!)

Yeah, Anthem is one of the better Rush songs. But it's not based on the Ayn Rand book Anthem. However, another Rush song - 2112 - is inspired by the book Anthem. Go figure. ;-)

Here is 2112 - as you'd expect, a song inspired by a book is pretty long. Broken into 3 parts on youtube:
