Is the Tea Party classical liberalism?
« on: April 18, 2011, 06:03:27 PM »
?Being a classical liberal means being a conservative when you need to preserve liberties you already have, a radical when you have to gain liberties you don?t have yet, a reactionary when you need to regain liberties you?ve lost, and a revolutionary when you can?t be free any other way. And always progressive, because without liberty, there can be no progress.?

? Carlo Cardasco, European director of Students for Liberty (via Oliver Cooper)

Who are some examples of "classically liberal"?

Who are some examples of "classically liberal"?

It is not about who, it is about what.

To answer the what, I'd need some examples of folks who practiced "classical liberalism"

Jefferson
Madison
Jackson
Hayek
Freidman
Thatcher

As if the who should have any bearing on the what

The who being imperfect examples, the what being the ideal.

And the question remains.

See #1 in this thread.

When you're asking a question on if a plethora of "whos" (the tea party) is demonstrating classical liberalism, it helps you, and the responses, to have an example of other who's, to answer your what

Not even Reagan was the "perfect example" of classical conservatism, though he is most often used when pushing a conservative agenda.  But Reagan is an appropriate who, when wishing to look towards examples of classical conservatism, and subsequent discussions of such

If you don't mind imperfection,( because this isn't PERFECTLY true) then yes that tea party is a good place for classical liberals.

Would Reagan have been comfortable with the Tea Party?

I think that Reagan would have been happy with any script they gave him, unless it involved someone like him losing money or control over his personal life.

Would Reagan have been comfortable with the Tea Party?

Yes.  The foundation of the tea party is fiscal restraint and constitutional government.  Social issues aren't even seen in any of their talking points.

Both Michelle Bachmann and Herman Cain have claimed Tea Party support and both have staked a position on social issues.

I thought their social position was "Big government, get your hands off my Medicare!"
