Without using Google...who said the following?
"There will be times when we must again play the role of the world's reluctant sheriff. This will not change - nor should it."

The issue here is on what occasions the US needs to assume that role.
Not in the case of a conflict between Russia and Georgia or some other ex-Soviet Republic.
Not in the case of Iran and Israel, Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers, China and Tibet, or Kashmir.
The important thing is never to get into a battle where victory is not certain, or where withdrawal will take over a year.

"Not in the case of Iran and Israel"
So you think the US should not get involved in a conflict between Iran and Israel and allow Isreal to vaporize Iran if needed?
For once I like your thinking here XO!

I think the key word here is reluctant. I don't see that meaning to go charging off like Don Quixote, tilting at windmills.

How much do we watch happen?
Rawanda?

The US would be wise to stay out of African civil wars, but it could instead fund some other country, like the RSA or Botswana to intervene in a situation like Rwanda, since it could be resolved within a year.
