UK expects Israeli attack on Iran
next month with US logistical support

DEBKAfile Special Report

November 10, 2011, 9:04 AM (GMT+02:00)

F-15 at Decimomannu air base, Sardinia

A senior Foreign Office official says British government ministers have been told to expect Israeli military action in the wake of the UN watchdog report "as early as Christmas or very early in the new year," the London Daily Mail reported Thursday, Nov. 10.  The ministers were told that Israel would strike Iran's nuclear sites "sooner rather than later" ? with "logistical support" from the US.

According to the British paper, which has good military and intelligence ties in London, President Barack Obama would "have to support the Israelis or risk losing Jewish-American support in the next presidential election." The bigger concern is that once Iran is nuclear-armed, it will be impossible to stop Saudi Arabia and Turkey from developing their own weapons to even out the balance of nuclear terror in the Middle East.

debkafile's military sources add that Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has told Obama more than once this year, "If Iran gets nuclear arms, Turkey will get nuclear arms."

The Daily Mail goes on to report that in recent weeks, British Ministry of Defense sources confirmed that contingency plans had been drawn up in the event that the UK decided to support military action.

debkafile refers to an earlier report that the British chief of staff, Gen. Sir David Richards, paid a secret visit to Israel on Nov. 2, followed the next day by the arrival in London of the Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak for talks with British defense and military heads.

The reference to US logistical support is explained by our military sources as pointing to the Libyan model of military intervention whereby France, Britain and Italy spearheaded the action against the Qaddafi regime while the United States from "a back seat" laid on satellite and aerial intelligence and placed at their disposal its logistical supply network, including the in-flight refueling of bombers and ordnance.

Transposing this model to an offensive against Iran, Israel's air and naval forces would front the attack on Iran with logistical and intelligence backup from the United States, while leading NATO powers France, Britain, Germany, Holland and Italy would participate directly or indirectly in the Israeli operation.

Since this attack would almost certainly bring forth reprisals from Tehran and its allies, Syria, Hizballah and the Palestinian Hamas and Jihad Islami, it would almost certainly expand into a wider Middle East conflict, thus also broadening US and West European military intervention.

Prospects are fading for the alternative to military action - tough new sanctions able to choke Iran's financial operations and oil exports after the nuclear agency confirmed its surreptitious attainment of a nuclear weapon capability.

Wednesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov promised visiting Iranian official Ali Baqeri that "Any additional sanctions against Iran will be seen? as an instrument for regime change in Tehran. That approach is unacceptable to us and the Russian side does not intend to consider such proposals."

China will certainly go along with Russia on this.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's first response to the IAEA report was to attack its credibility and declare that Iran would continue its nuclear program regardless of its findings

Iran prepares so much for this thay they could not be surprised in that way.

Perhaps an Isreali attack with Saudi Arabian logistical assistance would seem surprising.

  Thus the surprise.

Iran has attacked Saudi Arabia before , If you were in Saudi government , which enemy would you rather deal with ?

The Saudis are not going to become allies of the Israelis.

Israel and Saudi Relationship Expanding Over Iran

by Ben Moscovitch  - July 5th, 2009

Israel appears to have an unusual bedfellow- Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Arabian government agreed to permit the Israeli air-force to flyover the Islamic nation in order to attack Iran, according to reports. An official told the Sunday Times that if Israel quietly performed the operation, Saudi Arabia would not object to the flyover. Notably, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and advocate of a strike on Iran John Bolten said, "None of them would say anything about it publicly but they would certainly acquiesce in an overflight if the Israelis didn't trumpet it as a big success." Officials from both countries denied the reports, although analysts contend that Israel would need permission to flyover Iraq or Saudi for a successful strike on Iran.

Even though Israel and Saudi Arabia lack any official diplomatic ties, both countries fear that Iran could obtain a nuclear weapon and attack their countries. Iran continue threatens to destroy the Jewish state while ethnic and religious differences between Iran and Saudi Arabia (Sunni vs. Shiite and Arab vs. Persian) fuel competition between the two nations as they struggle for regional dominance. A former senior Mossad research told the paper, "The Saudis are very concerned about an Iranian nuclear bomb, even more than the Israelis."

Alongside the alleged Saudi role in encouraging an attack on Iran, the Saudi government also drafted the Arab Peace Initiative that would establish a Palestinian state in exchange for full diplomatic relations with some Arab countries. The plan, which emerged in 2002 and subsequently adopted by the Arab League, shows Saudi desire to further its relationship with Israel.

The Saudis probably have no way of preventing a flyover. But that does not make them allies.

I agree that the Saudis do not like the Iranians. But I don't see them fighting together with the Israelis.

Iran is being truly obnoxious lately towards the US and the Israelis.

Israel is being truly obnoxious towards pretty much everyone, including the US Administration.

WikiLeaks exposes Saudi-Israeli ties

by Laura Tyco - June 15, 2011

Saudi Arabia has always been cautious not to have any direct communication with Israel, but in 2002, King Abdullah launched an initiative that would normalize Riyadh?s ties with Tel Aviv.

Freshly- released WikiLeaks documents have uncovered a deep alliance between Israel and Saudi Arabia, reportedly affecting Riyadh?s ties with regional states.

One of the cables dispatched from Tel Aviv on March 2009, refers to a meeting between US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman and Israeli Foreign Ministry?s Deputy Director General for Middle East Yacov Hadas-Handelsman, Egyptian daily al-Masry al-Youm reported Tuesday.

The meeting, which involved other high-ranking Israeli officials, evolved around Tel Aviv?s relations with Persian Gulf nations and the situation in Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Iran.

At one point Hadas admitted to having secret communications with Saudi Arabia through various channels.

The Israeli official then added that relations between Qatar and Israel were even affected Doha?s belief that Tel Aviv maintains secret and powerful ties with Riyadh.?

Of course, indirect forms of communication through third parties happen all the time in diplomacy? so it can happen through Egypt, Jordan or the US,? the head of the London-based Gulf Strategic Studies Center, Omar Hassan, said.

Saudi Arabia has always been cautious not to have any direct and open communication or ties with Israel due to its position in the Muslim world.

However, in 2002, Saudi Arabia extended an initiative that it would normalize relations with Israel in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal to the 1967 borders and an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The initiative was reaffirmed in 2007, but no headway has been made in that regard.

WikeLeaks cables also underline that despite the recent regional developments, Israel continues to enjoy steady ties with Arab nations.

Meanwhile, the secret documents have unraveled Israel?s deep fear of Iran?s growing influence in the region, by pointing at Tel Aviv?s direct support for anti-Tehran positions held by the United Arabs Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt (before the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak).

Saudi Arabia has no real use for these, but the Saudi royals are easy to peddle stuff to. They see themselves as the owners of the country and all its resources.

I don't think we will see Israel and Saudi Arabia flying joint missions.

I just recalled a story that I read in somebody's book about the First Gulf War, but I can't remember whose, except that I think he was in the U.S. military.  The Iraqis were launching missiles at Israel and the U.S. was trying to shoot them down.  The action was being followed by the Saudi military in a real-time radar room with graphic map displays. There was a tense silence in the room as they watched launches and intercepts.  Then the radar showed the first Iraqi rocket to breaki through the anti-missile defences and land on Israeli soil and suddenly the roomful of Saudi officers erupted in spontaneous cheering.

The Saudis, like any other corrupt dictators anywhere, enjoy no immunity from the revolts of their angry military when their excesses lead them too far away from the wishes and values of the people whom they rule by brute force only.  We don't know how far discontent amongst anti-Israeli officers has gone, but again taking the role of the secret ally of the Jews and the Americans while other Arabs are trying to assert their own independence and dignity, just might be the last straw.

Although I think it's entirely feasible that the Saudis would assist an Israeli attack on Iran, I don't think the Israelis will attempt any such thing, but if they do, and the Saudis do provide them with any kind of logistic or other assistance, it will be interesting to see what this does for the stability of the Saudi regime.

The Israelis probably have very good intel on the Saudis, and the Jordanians have really good intel on both the Saudis and the Israelis.

But I do not see any attack, especially a nuclear attack occurring, as the US will not give permission.

Agreement

I think that the next atomic bomb to be used in an act of war , will be used without the permission of the USA.

Why does anyone even want to have atomic bombs, they surely know that they will never get US permission to use the expensive things.
