Richardson denies FOX News report of presidential announcement

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson's camp denied a FOX News report Thursday that he had announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination on the network.

In an interview with CNN, Pahl Shipley, Richardson's spokesman, said "the simple truth is the governor made no announcement."

"We are disappointed the FOX reporter took the governor's response to a hypothetical question out of context," Shipley said.

But FOX correspondent Carl Cameron, who interviewed Richardson, is standing by his report.

When asked Friday morning if Richardson "more or less said he was running for president," Cameron answered "Oh, not more, he did," during an interview on "FOX and Friends." Richardson is planning to create an exploratory committee in January, Cameron said.

Cameron acknowledged that the Richardson camp had denied that the governor had announced his candidacy, but Cameron said Richardson backtracked on an Associated Press report in 2005.

"He has been in this situation before," Cameron said.
