Nancy Pelosi has a leadership role , and in two years a chance to convince the country that Democrats are not soft on defence , setting up the Presidential race .

You don't suppose we will double down on Iraq?

The house under the dems can be a pesky thorn to Bush, but unless they have the stones to cut off funding , they don't call the shots. Oh they will hold hearings and preen for the cameras and do this investigation and that , but not much will come out of it.

All they will do is enhance the chances of a GOP Governor or other outside the beltway type coming in and grabing the prize. Remember Bush isn't running and Cheney said he won't.

I think she needs to convince the country that they're not psycho cowboys bent on spilling American blood for no good reason.

<<You don't suppose we will double down on Iraq?>>

Not unless Nancy has some serious mental illness that I'm presently unaware of.

Excuse me if I'm mistaken, but wasn't Ford's war funding cut by Congress?

If the House Democrats don't have the balls to cut the funding, they don't deserve to govern and they won't elect a Democrat in 08 either.  They've just got to make a better case to the public first, before they make the cut.

Ford's War funding?

I don't remember this , what was Fords war?

If Nancy Pelosi wants to lead the Party of Malise the path for this is marked.

If she wants to raise taxes , and the result is a worsened economy and an impoverishment of the government , perhaps Mr Laffer will finally get listened to.

I expect that because the winning Democrats ran to the center to get elected , there is a realignment within the Democrats comeing which would please Zell Miller greatly.

Winning Democrats that I'm aware of did not "run to the center" to get elected.   Who are you thinking of?

Which is the perfect position for Democrats. More Iraq quagmire will start knocking off more Republicans. One frontrunner - George Allen, whether he retains his seat or not - is already off the checklist.

Perhaps.

Might be fun to speculate on 2008 now.

First female House speaker: Nancy Pelosi
First Muslim congressman: Keith Ellison
First socialist senator: Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders a senator! I love it...

He is such a good man and he stands up for his beliefs no matter what others say. He stands up for the people.
I am so happy he won.

This is such a wonderful day.

I don't see a Muslim being electable on a national ticket either. I'm not sure what your point is.

Veetnam.

I seem to remember us pulling out of Vietnam right after Ford got into office; indeed the pull out had started before he acquired the office. The first budget passed while Ford was President was passed after the US Embassy had already been evacuated.

Did you not list those names as some indication of a bellwether change in american political ideology?

or was that some sorta nose thumbing?

Look. If you win the Senate you at least have the ability to thwart Scotus nominations. Thats a big prize.

But winning the house just changes the names on pork checks and i think the next big thing is going to be about pork anyway. and do you think the dems will exercise restraint after being in the desert for 12 years? The GOP will run in 08 all humble and talking about lessons learned and the dems will counter with inkstains on their fingers. Not a good position to be in. Of course they could do the right thing and slash spending and reduce the deficit but i don't see pumping billlions into capturing a deliberative body without retaining the ability to reward the investors. Know what i mean?

As notable historical consequences of this year's election.

I think you know me better than that Bt. I came here (or there) after Bush won re-election in 2004. I don't play that way.

I know what you mean. But you've seen Washington in action long enough to know how the game is played. The GOP won't learn lessons from this and the Democrats aren't cutting spending. The Democrats are going to propose popular spending proposals that corner the Republicans, so they can tie an increase in Defence spending to an increase in infrastructure spending. They will propose a minimum wage increase. The Republicans will oppose, though some may approve. The Republicans, for their part will propose the old garbage like flag burning amendment, some abortion law, and they will piss and moan about immigration.

Pork is pork and all of DeLay's K-street buddies will either find new jobs, switch sides, or straddle a fence if they can talk smoothly enough.

2008 will depend greatly on issues like Iraq, the economy, and whether scandals still continue to cause problems for either party.
