Brass

You know the game. Shoot for Bush and hit Libby. Either way the pristine is muddied.

Obama may be clean in this instance but what about Rahm Emanuel or David Axelrod or any of the other Chicago inside players who are attached to the president-elect at the hip.

And don't forget Rezko. He is the tie that binds.

You know, I can't wait till Fitz's tapes are online and we can all listen to how Rahm and Axelrod (never either my favorite folks in politics) totally shoot down Blago's demands.

If it turns out one of them DID say they'd go along, then I'll be surprised and condemn them along with everyone else, but, seriously, all of this has nothing to do with Barack Obama.

Of course, you guys who love all things GOP may think it will be oh so funny to see a cloud of Obama's administration but we're really facing some heavy shit here and I, for one, hope this all blows over VERY soon.

I'm going to check with him after the inauguration to see if he thinks he can clean my bathroom or maybe paint my house!

Not only that, the Liberal Media is not really telling all the players.  Apparently, they left DailyKos out of the "cover for Obama" loop.

Note the Chris Matthews reference at the end there.

Guilt By Imagination

It was clear from the start:

...ROD BLAGOJEVICH said he knows that the President-elect wants Senate Candidate 1 for the open seat but "they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation. Fuck them."

...that President-elect Obama wasn't playing ball with the corrupt governor of Illinois, but that hasn't stopped various media hacks from trying to turn the Rod Blagojevich scandal into Obamagate.

For example, from Politico, we get:

At first blush, Barack Obama comes out of the Rod Blagojevich scandal smelling like a rose. The prosecutor at a news conference seemed to give the president-elect a seal of approval, and the Illinois governor himself was caught on tape complaining that Obama was not interested in crooked schemes.

But make no mistake: For Obama and his team, the Blagojevich scandal is a stink bomb tossed at close range.

And Politico's reason for thinking that? Easy. Because Republicans will express pseudo-outrage, draw false connections, and Politico will report it.

And then there's this from Liz "Sprinkles" Sidoti of the Associated Press:

President-elect Barack Obama hasn't even stepped into office and already a scandal — not of his own making — is threatening to dog him.

Obama isn't accused of anything. But the fact that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a fellow Democrat, has been charged with trying to sell Obama's now-vacant Senate post gives political opponents an opening to criticize him. A slew of questions remain. The investigation is still under way. And the ultimate impact on Obama is far from certain.

While a bit more dramatic than the Politico opening, the message is the same: Yeah, sure, I know Obama isn't involved, but as long as I can find a Republican to talk about it, I've got a story.

The Washington Times went the inflammatory headline route:

Scandal casts cloud over Obama presidency

...while Chris Matthews opted for the incoherent:

But Fitzgerald made clear that Obama was not implicated today. Here he is, quote, "The complaint makes no allegations about the president-elect whatsoever." Obama said this afternoon that he had no contact with Governor Blagojevich over who was gonna fill that Senate seat.

Still, there are many unanswered questions, including that one.

The unifying theme throughout this coverage is, when you have a corrupt politician, caught on tape peddling influence and cursing like a sailor, guilt by imaginary association trumps boring issues like the economy and health care any day of the week.

I don't agree. Don't get me wrong, I like "Casablanca" much, but it's got certain flaws. One of which is the MacGuffin, the "letters of transit". It's complete nonsense that "letters of transit" would stop the Nazis from simply taking someone they wanted into custody, but this isn't something one thinks about when watching the film.

You're right but like you said, I've never once thought about it.  I think that's the whole point of a MacGuffin.  It's just this thing that is needed.  In CASABLANCA, its the letters.  In OZ'S LION, it was the bag of money.

I have a very old friend who runs this site about Linux.    http://montanalinux.org/

He's been into it for years and has been trying to convince me to adopt it.  The only reason I haven't is because I don't need or want something new to occupy my life trying to learn it; however, I LOVE that it is free.

As far as getting what you pay for, I'd much rather eat a tomato grown in my backyard than those pink ones with no flavor I get from the SuperLo.

You mean they CHOSE to do such?  It wasn't mandated by any governmental body or coerced thru taxation??  *gasp*   And here I thought that's the only way anything ever gets done
 ;)

Yeah, that's great and all, but check this out.

I found this site that said that SOS's income was a little over 3 mil from 2003 to 2006.  In 2008, they did repairs on something like 34 houses.  I didn't find any numbers on houses repaired from '03 to 06 but let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say they did repairs on as many or more.  Let's say in those years, they did repairs on 40 houses per year.

So, in 4 years at 40 houses a year, that's a 160 houses.  Their total net assets for those four years was 12.7 million (there abouts).

Now, what they did with that 12.7 mill was they had a bunch of kids come from all over the country to their camps.  They sang songs, ate, prayed, worked on houses, listened to sermons and showered.  (Their site mentions showering a LOT for some reason.)  That money came from a small group of people comparatively to the US taxpayer rolls.

Now, you may disagree, but if the government budgeted 12.7 mill to a team of say 20 people who were home repair types who just needed a job, I daresay they would have gotten a lot more houses fixed up, I bet.

If you pay 20 people $20 an hour for four years, that's just shy of 4 mill.  That means my secular, government-paid group would have over 8 million to spend on repair cost on houses.  And these 20 people wouldn't be dicking around with spouting gods' glory and spilling paint and cutting boards twice 'cause Susie got scared by the table saw.

Not to mention, they wouldn't be figuring in the cost of housing my 20 people or worrying about two of them sneaking off and kissing behind the shed.

I mean, according to SOS's own info, the spent only 26% of their budget on "construction".  I mean, expanding that out theoretically, 26% of 12.7 mill is 3.3 mill.  With my secular, government-funded 20 people, I more than double the amount spent on construction ergo, in four years, my group would have done repairs on 320 houses in that same timeframe.

What's more important?  Helping people maintain their neighborhood and giving people their dignity when they thought all hope was lost or spending 12.7 mill on a gods' glory and repairing half as many houses?

I'm being a little too snide here and apologies for that, old habits die hard.  Obviously, the 12.7 mill was spent by donors on what they thought was important and they got to make their own choices and some kids got some great stuff to put on their resume's and all the parents of the kids should feel proud.

But, imagine what a complete "army" of construction workers could do if they were funded by the government like the Armed Forces are.

Every now and then you find a church that feilds a ministry like this , but modern neighborhoods are full of strangers.

Well, you know how me and churches mix but there is a place about a block from me called "Service Over Self".  They're basically a churchy kind of thing (a ministry, I guess you could say) that brings in kids from schools and churches (and other people, I assume) and they go into poor neighborhoods to do repairs for people and yard work and the like.

Pretty churchy.

I downloaded something that is an "iso", how do I change that to a "dmg" on my mac?

OS X is supposed to support ISO files natively.

See, that's what I thought.  When I d-click on the iso, I just get an error saying that it is not a valid ISO file.

Maybe it is just corrupted or something.

I'm trying to get Rosetta Stone for French (all levels).

Your "evidence" again is simply some reporter speculating.  HARDLY any more valid than mine, considering party affiliation, and the long history both Chicago & Illinois have in the world of political scandal.  Nice try though

Actually, I'm REFERENCING the fucking affidavit, moron.  I don't know what in the world could more fit the definition of fucking evidence in your dumbass pea-brain.

I would think that when a US attorney submits an FBI affidavit and arrests a guy in his house for a crime, that might, in most peoples' mind suffice as "evidence" when making suppositions.

When Blagojevich says on tape that Obama is a motherf*cker 'cause he won't play ball, that kind of, at the very fucking least IMPLIES that Obama wasn't playing ball.

Or is that pure speculation with no hint of evidence in your own special brand of reality?

OMG, it gets even worse.

Patti Blagojevich's real estate success under scrutiny

By David Kidwell and John Chase

Chicago Tribune reporters

October 19, 2008

Illinois First Lady Patricia Blagojevich walked away from her successful career as a real estate agent earlier this year amid scrutiny from federal agents probing whether clients hired her to win favor from her husband's administration.

With her commissions plummeting and her most famous client, Antoin "Tony" Rezko, in prison on a corruption conviction, her once-lucrative career all but came to an end.

The Blagojeviches are not charged with any wrongdoing, and the financial affairs of first ladies are rarely the subject of public scrutiny. Since the Tribune first disclosed her eight-year financial relationship with Rezko, though, authorities have taken an interest in many of her real estate deals.

The Blagojeviches still refuse to say how much her home-based River Realty Inc. made from Rezko.

But a Tribune analysis of public records, along with real estate listings and interviews, reveals it earned more than $700,000 in commissions on other deals after her husband began raising money in 2000 for his first run for governor.

Of those commissions, the Tribune found that more than three-quarters came from clients with connections.

Patricia Blagojevich declined to be interviewed. Lucio Guerrero, a spokesman for the governor, said Patricia Blagojevich was hired on her merits and it would be a "disservice" to suggest otherwise.

Blagojevich, 43, now works as a full-time fundraiser for the Chicago Christian Industrial League—a job she started in September after a longtime political ally of her husband's talked to the director of the nonprofit homeless agency.

Before that, she had a brief job as an investment banker after touting her ability to land state business, according to the head of North Star Investment Management.

"I'm not going to lie to you, it would have been great for us to get one of the state pension funds," said Peter Contos, a North Star executive listed as the contact on her federal license application.

"But after three months she brought in no business," Contos said. "Obviously, her connections weren't as strong as advertised."

Records show she began working for the Chicago investment banking house in March, just before passing her federal exam to become an investment banker. She passed her state exam in May.

Contos said his firm decided to hire Blagojevich, who has a degree in economics from the University of Illinois, because of her political ties. He said she was recommended to him by an administrative staff member.

"This is not the kind of firm for rookies," he said, adding there are no training programs. "You come here, you either bring in business or you do not succeed. We had several talks with her about that."

Contos said he and others at North Star encouraged her to find work at a bigger firm, but she touted her connections and her ability to bring in business. "That's what we were thinking—it was worth a shot. Usually we tell people to work at a big firm for a few years and come here when they have clients and can bring business."

Contos said he and his partners had no knowledge of any federal investigation and she did not disclose any on her federal license application. He said Blagojevich answered "no" to the question on the 28-page application that asks, "Have you been notified, in writing, that you are now the subject of any investigation?"

Contos said he began learning of the scrutiny surrounding her after she started working for him.

"We started thinking better of it," he said. "Even if she had brought in some business, the last thing I need is to be dealing with federal regulators the rest of my life."

Politics also played a role in Blagojevich securing her current job as the main fundraiser for the Chicago Christian Industrial League.

Judith McIntyre, then the executive director of the grass-roots organization, said she spent six months searching for a development director before speaking with Gery Chico, a former U.S. Senate candidate whom McIntyre knew from their days working for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

"[He] said, 'I have a friend looking for a job,' " McIntyre recalled. "A few days later, the person called. It was Patti."

During a tour of the agency's West Side headquarters, Blagojevich and McIntyre hit it off, and McIntyre offered her the job, she said.

"I didn't see her as Mrs. Blagojevich. I saw her as someone who was touched by what she saw and wanted to help," McIntyre said. "She wants to so give back."

Chico said he didn't really help Blagojevich get the job—she did that on her own.

"I thought Mrs. Blagojevich would be an excellent fit," Chico said. "She wanted to do something of this nature, and I think I knew a little about what drives her. And let's face it—the first lady could help an organization like this."

So glad, you're finally catching on       8)

While I agree we both may be engaging in some form of "speculation", I still hold that my form of it is far more correct since it is based on evidence, while your "speculation" is cut from whole cloth.

So, when Fitzgerald has completed this investigation, will it actually be complete?  Apparently the last one is still ongoing to many, since certain folks are still not indicted or not arrested for anything

Don't know.

Another liberal who can see into the future. You couldn't possibly know Brass. You know nothing about the man. I can think of lots of men throughout history who give a good speech and make the ladies swoon. Men too.

I will say though, I wouldn't want his job for all the scotch in Scotland.

Nor would I want his job.

I'm not overly excited about any of his choices for his cabinet as of yet but I have confidence in his ability to address issues.  I'm a pretty good judgment of character.  I was right about Bush.  I was right about Cheney.  I was right about the Clintons.  I was right about Dean.  I was right about Ford Jr.  I was right about Steve Cohen.  I feel pretty sure I'll be right about Obama.
