Is there a solution to this?

There could be more pilots hired , this would give each one of them less money and increase the cost of a ticket a little.

A tecnical fix would be a sensor that could count the blink rate of a pilot and warn the airplane.

I doubt the APA would allow this. The APA controls the number of pilots similar to the AMA and physicians.

I suggest that dumping on the pilots' union is not going to change anything.

Pilots do not want to fall asleep, crash and die any more than passengers. I  would encourage an expresso machine in every cockpit. A built-in alarm clock would also be desirable.

It is quite acceptable for a pilot to sleep in his seat , as long as his co-pilot is alert.

This is the point of haveing the two of them it makes it easyer to have an alert pair of eyes always scanning the path ahead and the instruments if there are two pair and they can give each other breaks.

Aircraft are constantly getting smarter and it is already being discussed whether an aircraft should have a sensor package on the pilot. The Plane can then be a third crewman to help keep it certain that one of the two is alert and responsible.
