it's amazing to watch the human spirit overcome shackles imposed by control freaks

What job does not involve undoing the mistakes of others sometimes?

The message was clear: Cuba's government-controlled farmers were not doing their job well. Currently, half of Cuba's arable land is not cultivated, but many here believe private ownership of some farmland would free farmers to produce more in a country that imports 80 percent of its food.
Raul is right: there is absolutely no reason for hunger or even food shortages in Cuba. Cuba should easily be able to grow more than enough to feed everyone. This is also true of Venezuela, which is much larger than Cuba. Three growing seasons a year are possible in both countries.
Of course, capitalism might not be the answer, either: Puerto Rico imports nearly all of its food, a higher percentage than Cuba. People can own land in Puerto Rico. Food is more expensive in Puerto Rico than in New York.
