Poll: Majority of voters back Trump travel ban

By STEVEN SHEPARD 07/05/2017 05:58 AM EDT

A clear majority of voters supports President Donald Trump's travel ban on visitors from six predominantly Muslim countries, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.

Polling on the travel restrictions has varied wildly since the Trump administration first unveiled the first executive order in late January. But after months of litigation and controversy, six-in-10 voters back the ban, and the survey suggests the actual policy may be more popular when separated from the president.

Asked whether they support or oppose the State Department's "new guidelines which say visa applicants from six predominately Muslim countries must prove a close family relationship with a U.S. resident in order to enter the country," 60 percent of voters say they support the guidelines, and only 28 percent oppose them.

The POLITICO/Morning Consult question doesn't mention Trump, nor does it refer to the president's executive orders on immigration. That contrasts with other polls, which mostly show greater opposition to the policy. An Associated Press-NORC Center poll last month showed a 57-percent majority of Americans thought courts were acting rightly in blocking the travel ban. That was conducted before the Supreme Court's per curiam decision last week to let some elements of the ban go into effect while the high court waits to hear the case in the fall.

Republicans overwhelmingly back the restrictions, the poll shows. Eighty-four percent of GOP voters support the ban, while only 9 percent oppose it. But the policy is also popular among independent voters: 56 percent support it, compared to 30 percent who oppose it. Democrats tilt slightly against the ban, with 41 percent supporting it, and 46 percent in opposition.

The wording of the poll question in the new survey differs from back in March, after Trump signed a revised executive order in an effort to comply with lower-court rulings against the initial ban. In March, respondents were asked if they "approve or disapprove of a revised executive order that prohibits persons from six predominantly Muslim countries without visas from entering the United States for 90 days and halting the processing of refugees for 120 days." Back then, 56 percent of voters approved of the order, and 33 percent disapproved.

"Since we last asked about Trump's travel ban, we've seen a drop in those who oppose the executive order," said Morning Consult Chief Research Officer and Co-Founder Kyle Dropp. "Though, we've also seen an uptick in those who do not have any opinion on the matter or have yet to settle on one."

Though the poll shows solid support for the ban, it also suggests voters are open to broader exemptions for visitors from those countries who have family living in the United States than the ones outlined by the State Department. Eighty percent of voters think travelers from those six countries should be admitted to the U.S. if they have a parent living in America, and 78 percent think they should be admitted to join a spouse or child in the country; all three are permitted under the directive.

Nearly three-quarters, 73 percent, think travelers with a sibling in the U.S. should be admitted, which the policy allows. Sixty-seven percent think travelers with a grandparent in the country should be admitted, though the policy allows neither grandparents nor grandchildren from claiming those relationships to obtain a visa.

The policy allows travelers from the six countries to enter if they have a parent, parent-in-law, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sibling, or half sibling, including step relationships, in the country.

But grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and any other "extended" family members may not claim those relationships.

The poll was conducted June 29-30, surveying 1,989 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.

six predominately Muslim countries

This gets said a lot , I suppose these are carefully chosen words , intended to make the action seem like religious prejudice.

What a bunch of weasels.

If they liked the president they might say "six predominately terrorist infested countries " which would be more accurate.

These are not the six biggest Muslim nations , these are not the majority of the Muslims in the world nor even a quarter of them.

But if you made a list of the ten most Terrorist plagued nations , I do not see you leaving these six out.

Just a co-incidence that most of the most terrorist infested nations are also Muslim.

Totally unrelated.

My question is would the ban hurt or help the enemy. I say in context of the IRA to englang which the actions they took actually helped the IRA gain support for thier cause. Would the ban give the terrorist support to grow and gain more resources.

Politico’s poll on Trump’s travel ban is fake news
There is only one problem with this story: it isn’t true.

This morning, Politico published a story with a provocative headline: “Poll: Majority of voters back Trump travel ban.”

“A clear majority of voters supports President Donald Trump’s travel ban on visitors from six predominantly Muslim countries, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll,” the piece begins.

The story was quickly embraced by White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

There is only one problem with this story: it isn’t true.

Politico did not even ask a polling question ab0ut the latest version of Trump’s travel ban, which is expressed in a March 7 executive order. Rather, the poll asked about “new guidelines which say visa applicants from six predominately Muslim countries must prove a close family relationship with a U.S. resident in order to enter the country.” These guidelines are not Trump’s policy, but a requirement imposed through a per curium order of the Supreme Court.

We grant the Government’s applications to stay the injunctions, to the extent the injunctions prevent enforcement of §2(c) with respect to foreign nationals who lack any bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States. We leave the injunctions entered by the lower courts in place with respect to respondents and those similarly situated, as specified in this opinion.

Trump opposes allowing visa applicant from these countries to enter the United States if they “prove a close family relationship with a U.S. resident in order to enter the country.” Trump’s order dictates “that the entry into the United States of nationals of those six countries be suspended for 90 days from the effective date of this order, subject to the limitations, waivers, and exceptions set forth in sections 3 and 12 of this order.” There are exceptions for dual nationals or people who already have valid visas?—?but there is no exception for family members. The Trump administration is actively fighting this requirement.

In sum, Politico substituted a policy that Trump opposes, called it “Trump’s travel ban” and is using it to claim that “Trump’s travel ban has majority support.”

The Politico article acknowledges that “The POLITICO/Morning Consult question doesn’t mention Trump, nor does it refer to the president’s executive orders on immigration.”

Polling of Trump’s actual travel ban has consistently shown that a majority of Americans oppose it. This includes polls from CBS (51% oppose), CNN (53% oppose), Quinnipiac (55% oppose), Pew (59% oppose).

I suppose it really depends on how the poll is prompted, as in is the question:

Do you support Trump's Travel ban on predominantly muslim nations?

vs

Do you support Trump's travel ban on the 6 predominantly Muslim nations that the previous administration desginated as terrorist havens?

vs

Do you support Trump's travel ban on 6 predominantly terrorist supporting/training nations?

I would wager that the polling results would be vastly different, despite it occupuying the same policy being implimented

Seems like a small difference , to make so much difference in opinion.

So allowing Parents in is enough to make the majority?

Perhaps President Trump should just make the change and enforce what the Supremes have allowed. The difference may not be worth the candle.

Ok i stated this ban may backfired on us and so far isee no advantage to the enemy but it does have an effect on people coming on. I stated on another post we will appear as an isolationist. This will have a notable economic impact on us. Even for those not directly effected it will make rethink to and from america. I predict this will effect our imports .

Oh no...
We just wont survive as a country without the Sudanese, Syrians, etc...coming!
We will collapse without millions of poor, uneducated Mexicans and Guatemalans pouring in.
The Holiday Inn Express motels will all close!
We already let in many, many, many more than most countries
But unless we keep it at this ridiculous rate we will go down the drain!

What a load of bs this article is....
The point being NONE of this would have happened without Trump!
Most legislation or policies are never 100% what the creator wants
It's almost always compromised in some fashion
This IS Trump's Travel Ban because none of it happens unless he pushed the agenda.
Once more Baby Scalia's are packed on the court it will only get easier to get more righteousness done.

The Trump Administration Has Increased
Immigration Enforcement Through This One Key Action

By ALEX PFEIFFER - White House Correspondent

07/06/2017

The Trump administration has ended a form of prosecutorial discretion that was prevalent during the Obama administration to make it easier to deport illegal immigrants.

Prosecutorial discretion generally refers to the ability of prosecutors to prioritize certain cases due to operational constraints. This was used by the Obama administration to enact out its immigration policy, specifically by prioritizing the deportation of gang members, criminal aliens, and very recent entries. Under this policy, immigration attorneys could make the case that their clients fell within the non-enforcement categories and thus should not be deported.

A May email from Immigration and Customs Enforcement's office of the chief counsel in Baltimore to an immigration attorney obtained by The DC stated that prosecutorial discretion will no longer be "triggered by an affirmative request." An ICE spokeswoman Sarah Rodriguez told The Daily Caller last week, this meant that ICE is no longer entertaining requests of prosecutorial discretion from attorneys representing illegal immigrants.

"Before Obama, prosecutorial discretion in the immigration context simply referred to instances where ICE attorneys would, for a variety of case-specific reasons, pursue other avenues in lieu of deportation, like allowing an illegal alien to return voluntarily instead of being formally deported (known as voluntarily departure), pursuing supervised release instead of detention pending a removal-hearing, or granting a temporary stay of removal for emergency or public interest reasons," Ian Smith, an attorney with the Immigration Reform Law Institute told TheDC.

"Unlike Obama's broad-based nonenforcement carve-outs, each of these alternatives are expressly provided for in the federal immigration statute and are allowed to be pursued by ICE agents and attorneys according to closely set parameters and on an individualized basis," Smith added.

The Obama administration did not keep figures on how many illegal immigrants received prosecutorial discretion, so it is hard to directly quantify how many more will be deported due to this new policy.

President Trump has put all 12 million or so illegal immigrants in the country up for deportation, except the estimated 790,000 illegal aliens who receive DACA.

ICE Director Thomas Homan said at a recent press conference that no illegal immigrant should "be comfortable" in the U.S.

Federal judge keeps in place Trump's
travel ban rules following challenge from Hawaii

by Josh Siegel | Jul 6, 2017

A federal judge has denied Hawaii's request to clarify the scope of the Supreme Court's lifting of the blockade against President Trump's travel ban.

The ruling Thursday evening by U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson leaves in place the Trump administration's rules regarding what classes of people to exempt from the travel ban.

Trump's ban, implemented by a revised executive order, sought to prevent nationals from six Muslim-majority countries, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, from entering the U.S. for 90 days and some refugees from all countries for 120 days.

In agreeing to hear the travel ban litigation in its October term, the Supreme Court lifted holds on the executive order required by the 4th and 9th circuit courts of appeals.

Specifically, the high court allowed the Trump administration to block these travelers unless they have a "bona fide relationship with the U.S." The Trump administration defined "bona fide relationship" to mean close family members only: parents, spouses, siblings, children, and engaged partners.

It would block entry of grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins from the six countries.

Hawaii then argued in federal court that the Trump administration's interpretation of "bona fide relationship" was too narrow, contending that "the government intended to violate the Supreme Court's instruction."

The Trump administration countered that its decision about how to implement the ban was compatible with the Immigration and Nationality Act and "hews closely to the categorical determinations articulated by Congress."

Watson, who originally ruled to block the travel ban, said in his Thursday decision that Hawaii should bring its challenge of the Trump administration's definition of "bona fide relationship" to the Supreme Court.

"The clarification to the modifications that the parties seek should be more appropriately sought in the Supreme Court," Watson wrote.

Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin did not say how the state will proceed.

"While we understand Judge Watson's direction to address our request to the United States Supreme Court, we must evaluate that against the normal course of order as it relates to appeals and the clarification of injunctions," Chin said in a statement. "Whatever course it takes, we will get this resolved. The scope of the travel and refugee bans badly needs to be resolved and not just according to the Trump Administration's interpretation."

So....we're playing semantic games?  Well, that's kind of making my point, in that it depends on how a poll is worded, when one starts trying to use polls as a support for one's claim/accusation
