We talked about this in 2011 when we stopped maned space flights in the U.S. Many thought the money saved can help better causes. But ironically very little or no savings was made since we ended up paying russians to send guys and satellites into space. The program reactivated the next year but to this day we still haven't got anyone up in space.
but we get do get the difference between public and privately funded research on space travel now. Both got totally different goals and approaches.

Kimba....I guess we have only suspended manned space travel?
NASA still exists doesn't it?
When you think about it....sometime in the future planes like cars will probably be moving towards pilotless
so really unmanned space travel and exploration will mostly be unmanned as well

NASA funding got cut and manned travel in the U.S. got scraped in 2011. so NASA still exist but that situation set things back alot. actually most airliners can fly by itself but it`s just not very attractive to do and in a emergency situation they prefer a pilot to be on hand. I believe only on take-off and landing are pilots ever used on the plain.
we`re doing unmanned space travel right now with all those probes we`ve sent out already
