If it took him years to burn his papers, he sure must have had a lot of them.
If I were permitted to burn mine, I think I could get it done quite week within a week.
As it is, there is an ordinance, and I can only throw them out. I could also shred them, but I am in Miami-Dade County and my papers are in English, so what would be the point?
A lot of my papers I could destroy with fdisking my harddrive.

There is a series of patterns that you need to write to make sure it's erased. Just writing zeroes will still allow most of the data to be recovered using sophisticated tools.

Because of the physics of the magnetic coating. Just writing a zero allows the data to be recovered because not all of the particles will have changed position. There is some evidence that the NSA can recover several "versions" of data written to disks - peeling back the layers of written data, so to speak.
Is there no free program that will erase all data?
I wrote one about 20 years ago. I'm sure there are some out there. Norton had one called "shredder" for a while.

Depends on the level of heat and strength of the fields.

The Government and several large companys have had a problem with stolen data , many times because a poorly secured laptop was stolen.
Would it be worthwile to build a destructive device into a hard drive ?

Better to use a good security system. We use a combination of RSA's SecurID and whole-disk encryption for our corporate laptops. SecurID is the electronic version of a "one time pad" - and about as secure as you can get. The key changes every minute, so I literally have a new password every minute. Here is an article about SecurID (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecurID). This authentication is used for all of our systems, not just the corporate laptops.
