I have made a lot of monkey fists.

The Navy way is to include little or no stone but most of it is a rolled up sock.

For practice throws it is not very dangerous , when you need to make a long throw you soak the monkey fist in water for a few minutes , it gets pretty heavy then.


Also you usually build it on the end of about sixty feet or more of small line, with experience passing a line between ship and quay is as easy as a game of catch.
