Title: Obama Supporters Are Missing In Action After Speech
Post by: Kramer on September 04, 2008, 12:40:19 AM
Well folks, I truly understand why you LIBERALS aren't lurking around HERE after the VP speech.

She hit a home run and you are scared.

This is what it will look like on Nov 5th too.

Honest opinion of the speech Brian?

Again, my name is spelled with a Y not an I but here's my honest opinion.

When she first started speaking, I immediately went, "Uh-oh".  Then a few more lines into I said to the wife, "Holy Crap!  I forgot,  she's got a degree in journalism and she was a sports reporter on tv!  That's the voice she's talking in."

I was a bit taken aback, and admittedly, still am a bit by how together she was even though I had sort of prepared myself to expect her to knock it out of the park somehow.   She was much more composed and progressional than I had anticipated.

She did a good job of presenting her back story.  Her family didn't appear to be the negative image that she has garnered over the past week or so.  Those who don't know about her or haven't read anything about her will think that she is all that.

She did a good job of attacking.  I would say that she did a great job at first but as she went on and on with her sarcastic attacks, over and over again, it came off as exactly what a lot of people online are saying now:  she sounded like Tracy Flick from the movie Election (a great movie with Reese Witherspoon and comparing her to Flick is not a good thing).

Her speech was the opposite of Barack Obama's.  Her speech was divisive and used fear to divide whereas Barack Obama acknowledged our differences and urged consensus.  Her jabs were very sarcastic and petty, in my opinion.

Having said that, I'm glad she came out all feisty and swinging because that will make it a little easier for Biden to hand her her hat in October.  He'll have to wait for her to throw a couple or three punches to make sure she is asking for it but it will allow him to totally eviscerate her with his experience.

To sum up, expertly delivered red meat meant to rile up and energize the few of you who actually think that McCain and Palin might have a chance but overall too sarcastic and petty with no substance to appeal to middle of the road independents.

I'm going to have to disagree with you Brass.

Even though she did serve up some red meat to the audience she didn't do it in a mean spirited way.

I liked her joke about the pitbull vs the hockey mom.

She was very flyover country, in fact i was surprised at her accent, Edie McClurg  maybe but less annoying, not quite Fargo but close. I think she connected with main street. She might shop at Wal- Mart, no pretense.

Very down to earth. Bristol's fiancee cleans up well, not the hell raiser bad boy image that was posted on the boards.

She'll hold her own against Biden when they have their go round.

She does have that everyman quality about her, she's likable and Biden has a bad habit of putting his foot in his mouth.

I have a bad feeling about this election. I am disappointed that Biden and Obama will look to bring criminal charges against Bush. That isn't change that is just more of the same.

I got a call from a friend today asking if i wanted an Obama sign for my yard. I demurred, truthfully saying i was still undecided. Saw him tonight. Good guy, but saying the most vile things about Palin and her daughter. I said good thing you aren't on Obama's staff, though when he called he was at the local Obama headquarters, because he said he would fire anyone who went after Sarah's family. He started countering about how if it were a democrat, Hannity would be all over it, then he stopped, said you're right, he did say that. Then he said McCain should have vetted her better. I said she is being vetted right now. I said if there was anything fatal, you guys would have it by now.

He was getting angry so i just told him I was happy he found a candidate to believe in.

I think one of the reasons Hillary lost was because in the back of peoples minds, they thought the nastiness would continue or get worse, politics being a bloodsport and all. I think they went with Obama to indicate they are getting tired of it.

Hopefully Obama's faithful will follow his lead. I was impressed when he made the statement about firing his staffers.

One thing I do know, this country can not afford to waste another 4 or 8 years to infighting. I really don't want to see your Benjamin and my grandson Charlie arguing about who should pay for the internet.

We have more important items on our platter. Energy, education, water, aging and employment are just some of them.

It's time for the grown-ups to appear.

Still not sold on McCain.

It's early.

Lot will happen between now and Nov.

Giulani's speech was so annoying I switched the damned thing off.

I don't want to hear any more GOP crap.

We need decent healthcare, we need liberal or even socialist judges, we don't need any more wars or crap about how the GOP is going to cause the government to shrink., because that has NEVER HAPPENED, at least since the Grant administration.

It's all just lies, lies, lies and more advertising hype.

Did anyone notice that absolutely NO mention was made of the larcenious, lying, ghastly Dick Cheney by even one republican?

I saw the speech waiting to meet the (delayed) New York plane at the Toronto Island Airport last night.  There was a small crowd of incoming passengers (Montreal, Ottawa, so presumably mostly Canadian) waiting for the ferry to the city, standing in a semi-circle in front of the TV on the terminal wall, gathered there only after the previous speakers, who had been generally ignored.  Mostly silent, some grimacing occasionally in disgust, some laughing openly or shaking their heads and smiling at various parts of the speech.  Two or three guys (no women) chuckled at the "hockey mom" joke, which was about the only positive reaction I saw.  Everything else was neutral or negative.  The comments I could overhear were all of the same nature - - "election bullshit" and seemed to be an indictment not so much of Palin but of any and every politician of any and every party.  I didn't get the sense that any of the people I overheard would have reacted any more favourably to Joe Biden.  The ferry came in while she was still speaking and not one of the 30 or 40 waiting passengers and crew wanted to wait the 15 minutes till the next ferry to hear the end of her speech, which probably says something about the quality of it.

My own reaction was that this was a speech I had expected, she covered all the bases, didn't fuck up anywhere, but (and I say this with the Obama-and-his-teleprompter comments in mind) she clearly gave the impression of doing a good job of reading or reciting a speech that more sophisticated writers had prepared for her - - mechanically going through the motions.  On the personal parts of her "story," I didn't connect.  It sounded rehearsed, too carefully crafted, insincere.  The promise to "special needs" parents particularly grated, somehow sounding like, "I'll help you with your problems when your problems are the same as mine," but that was as far as it went.

This was NOT the "out of the ballpark" speech that would be needed to dispel the negatives that are gathering around her.  The hyperbolic claims both as to her competence and the Democratic ticket's incompetence rang hollow even as they were being spoken, with a partisan audience's cheers ringing in the background, but in the light of day they will appear to be truly pathetic.

The woman is the definition of lightweight, her own family is the living antithesis of her positions on sex ed, abortion and "family values" generally - - and I think when people understand what it means to be the mother of a Down syndrome child, they'll come to understand that nobody can be that and the President of the United States of America at the same time.

If anyone thinks she "knocked it out of the park," I did not see a single reaction from anyone in last night's little crowd that would indicate she hit a home run, or even gave a particularly effective speech.  I think her speech was unremarkable in all respects, C+ to B-, which would be OK in a client of average qualifications for the job, but she's facing heavy criticism for being under-qualified and thus needed more than an "OK" speech.

I totally agree with you on nearly everything.  For me, the only difference was that she came off VERY sarcastic and snarky.

Obama just seems more wise and I can't remember him doing snarky.

Palin shored up the base a little.  My understanding is that independents were very turned off by her following the speech in at least one network viewing.

Maybe the image will fade but I fear it will grow and she'll be back to a boat anchor on Monday.

No, not at all.  No references to how many homes someone has.  no references to anyone's POW experience.  No references to small towns & communities.  Naaaa, no sarcasm or snarkiness, what-so-ever there

Source?  MSNBC's audience, perhaps?  Quite the opposite from my "understanding" however

I look at it this way - a vote for McCain 2008 is a vote for Palin 2012.

I have little doubt that, true to form, McCain will turn around and kick conservatives square in the teeth even before he takes the oath of office.

But he's at least thrown us a bone with Sarah Palin, and a big juicy bone she is. And that's more than we're going to get from Barack Obama.

A Sarah Palin in office does me more good than a Bob Barr who isn't.

Sarah Palin covers many sins.....

A vote for Olebush in 1988 is a vote for Quayle in 1992.

A vote for Juniorbush in 2000 is a vote for --- are you ready for this?---DICK CHENEY in 2008.

As Spongebob once said to Plankton, "Lotsa luck with that."

The Oligarchy does not want a smaller government, that would cut off one of their favorite places to steal from.

This smaller government crap is dead, like the horsecar, like Rinso with Sunshine Brighteners.
