This country can easily afford all of this. And unlike the stupid Iraq Wars, it will be spent here at home, where it will have a multiplier effect.

The idea that every presidential candidate will automatically have imperial powers and will be able to enact everything he promises with no need to pass anything through Congress seems to once more have grabbed your fancy (or the fancy of whomever you copied this from).

You and your plagaree need to have your fancies checked.

Do you think the American economy would benefit from a very large increase in tax load?

Even if he only managed a third of this program , that would still be the same tax load as now , plus six trillion.

That could represent a lot of lost jobs .

Right now our economy is slowly struggling upwards and employment is beginning to improve, just.

But taxes are setting records, the government is raking it in better than ever.

How can this not be a drag on the economy?
Seems as though the recession could have ended a bit sooner and recovery could be stronger if the strength of the country was carrying less dead weight.

First off, it would be madness to believe that Bernie Sanders or any candidate would be able to get such a large list through Congress.
So I would be voting for what I think he might be able to accomplish.

So far as I know, James Polk was the only president who had two promises and kept both of them: annex Texas and acquire what is now Oregon and Washington State. And even he did not manage to get territory as far as he wanted, he did not get fifty-four forty, and he did not fight.

Ah hell....I wish he would have not kept the first promise!

Texas desperately wanted annexation because it was totally broke. The money was worthless, the government was on its last legs.
Texas would have never lasted as an independent country until they hit oil.

Oh bulllshit. There were at least two major factions....some wanted Washington help, the other faction did not want to become a state. Sure Texas was poor, but there were many poor US States as well. Texas would have made it...and maybe even be larger than it is today.

You should read more on the Republic of Texas. It was beyond poor, it was utterly destitute.

It was probably not in as sorry a state as Mississippi after the Civil War, where people were starving all over the place.

If Texas had not been annexed , who would have invaded Mexico ?

Mexico did not require invading.

The speculation here is whether Texas would have survived as an independent country. I doubt that it could have. The plan was to seize California as well.

The step was on the slippery slope.

It is fun to speculate , even though it is very unscientific.

One of the things that the Republic of Texas did now and then was raid Mexico for funds and resources.

That war was probably inevitable , but it could have been different.

This article seems to be saying that Mexico's Navy had an Ironclad warship thirty years before the CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor.
