Title: The New South
Post by: _JS on October 23, 2007, 09:43:03 AM
Top Gear in Alabama (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHj25zd1K_A)

For those who don't know, Top Gear is a BBC car show somewhat known for their controversey. In this particular piece of this episode they were given the challenge to paint one another's cars in a manner that would likely get the other person "hurt or arrested" in Alabama.

The whole episode was unbelievably funny. They began by purchasing their vehicles in Miami for under $1000 and had different challenges along the way, including one night of eating only roadkill.

Sounds tacky and low class to me. Making fun of another's lifestyle is inappropriate. Plus, it is just uncouth.

And y'all have given me the moniker of PC police.  ::)

I'm Southern too. Sometimes you have to laugh at the culture that exists in your own backyard.

Plus, the show is known for its rather controversial side of looking at cars.

Nothing wrong with Alabama. I've had some of my best fishing there...

There is nothing wrong with fishing in Alabama.

I saw that show and it was a bit of a riot. But most of the Alabamans just looked at these guys, only a few tried to clobber them.

It would be about like driving down the road in a car with her Royal Highness painted on it with blacked out teeth and perhaps vile slogans.

It was essentially rather stupid, but not nearly as stupid as any episode of Cops or Jerry Springer.

It never fails to amaze me that when people go out of their way to piss people off they are shocked when they actually succeed.

Is there a point where the humor crosses the line?

In fairness to the drivers, they didn't paint anything bigoted about the people of Alabama themselves. So it wouldn't be the equivalent of going into Harlem or Memphis with a racist epithet painted on your car.

I honestly don't think that a picture of the Queen painted up vulgarly would elicit the same response in Britain. I might can think of a few things that would, depending on where you go.

What would you have done if you saw them at a gas station?
