Heath Ledger was found dead today in a New York City apartment owned by Mary-Kate Olsen according to the New York Times:
At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger?s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities.
The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said pills were found near the body.
TMZ reports Heath Ledger was in full cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived and was announced dead at the scene.

The coverage of this clearly exposes the purience of the media.
Just when reports of the sadness of such a loss should have been held with some respect, the press suddenly interrupts its own spongy sentimentality which is supposed to pass for eulogic commentary, lifts its eyebrows with sensational promise, and raises its voice with a sense of gossipy urgence--'hey, look, another celebrity factors in, and what does it MEAN? How does this new celebrity factor in? Was she involved? Did she contribute? Was he fucking her?
Handled with a kind of 'let's look at some shit' mindset, which more or less explains the whole of the popparotzi raison d'etre.
Meanwhile, the overtones of the supposedly less salacious press members are turned to broaden the story in order to expand its play, all the while pretending to be presenting all sides: one serious drama critic states Ledger's performance in Brokeback suggests depth equal to Brando, while the rabid holy man from Kansas suggests that Ledger has been assassinated by Jesus for his sins.
Some serious critic ought to point out that the media's performance in this story recalls the pulpy zippiness of a pimp, or barker outside the hooch show.

There are laws that protect my right to do that. Even in here public figures are fair game. At least they have been in the past. Rules may have changed or they may now only apply yo certain members. The difference here is supposed to be that members can't abuse other members verbally by calling them bitches, dogs, or mention there personal hygiene (apparently). But of course those rules only apply to certain members. You are excluded, as are all the other liberal/fascist/communist members of this little corner of the net.

It is pretty stunning, and I guess time will fuel the speculative tangents as to why things went down as they did; Heath in 1 of the Olson twins' apt, naked, no notes, no apparent suicidal indications or comments. Was he just having a harder time getting some sleep? The combination of medications too much? And the posting on the timelime of who was called, when he was found....frellin incredible. But of course, I'm sure it really is Bush's fault, in some way
Seriously though, he was one of my wife's favorite young actors, having 1st seen & loved him in A Knight's Tale (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0183790/) He sure looked like he had promise as an actor.....but so did River Phoenix, and so many other young actors. Sad, and my sympathies go out towards his family and daughter :(

He was naked because his masseuse was about to arrive...no doubt, but the pills in his system...who knows?
He was ill, from what I read. Perhaps the combo of prescript meds and his pneumonia contributed to death.
He was a superior actor, the new Marlon Brando and Meryl Streep...says the media.

You may have seen the great Mary Tyler Moore episode where she was trying to stifle her laughter at a funeral. Not just a joke, but a whole episode. They made a whole episode around this idea, and it was one of the more memorable.

NEW YORK(AP) Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose of painkillers, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and other prescription drugs, the New York City medical examiner said Wednesday.
The cause of death was "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a statement.
The drugs are the generic names for the painkiller OxyContin, the anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax, and the sleep aids Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is a prescription painkiller.
Borakove wouldn't say what concentrations of each drug were found in Ledger's blood, or whether one drug played a greater part than another in causing his death.
"What you're looking at here is the cumulative effects of these medications together," she said.
The ruling comes two weeks after the 28-year-old Australian-born actor was found dead in the bed of his rented SoHo apartment. Police found bottles of six types of prescription drugs in his bedroom and bathroom, and a rolled-up $20 bill near the bed.
Ledger's family returned to the actor's hometown of Perth, Australia, on Tuesday to prepare for his funeral. Arrangements were private.
In a statement released through Ledger's publicist, the actor's father, Kim, said Wednesday: "While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."

I'm not a doctor (put I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once), but I think any of those drugs taken together as perscribed wouldn't cause a problem. However, he took them all at once, and I'd be willing to bet he took them in larger quantities than perscribed also.
So he was either stupid, or really was trying to kill himself.

With all due respect Kimba, and again this is in reference to my earlier query, you don't prescribe OxyContin for "some pain". It's one of the, if not THE most powerful pain medication, you can take orally. You have to be in excruciating pain, the likes of which can't be addressed with anything less, to get it.
And that's just the 1 medication he had in his system

I'm wondering if he had one doctor give him all the prescriptions, or if there were more than one. I know that a couple years ago when I had a stressful situation that was seriously impacting my health and sleep, I was on Valium, Xanax, trazodone, and Seroquel at the same time. I came to the conclusion that the pills were worse than the underlying situation and weaned myself off of them, and haven't had anything than an occasional Vicodin in the last three years.
I do recall reading that Ledger had a serious sleeping disorder, I wonder if the meds he had were to address that?

You know Fatman, we all have meds to take these days for one thing or another. ....Blood pressure, and thyroid, not to mention meds for menopause etc... (for me, anyway).....but, you know I wonder if Heath's doctors from one continent to another bothered to ask if any other MD was prescribing him medications. Did they check to see if that were the case? If so would they have realized the build up could be toxic/deadly?
It's so easy for us to assume that doctors KNOW what they are doing..... and that the medications we take will do the job. I would think one med would do the job for sleeplessnes, for example-not three. .....but, people are dying. We only see the "Hollywood" people die before our eyes, but what about Joe/Jane Public?
Could it be that we don't bother to educate ourselves as to what is being prescribed. We just trust?
The ads on the tube seem to suggest miracles.....whether subconsciously or not, are they reaching into our minds to convince us that we will live in a Walgreens world?

actually drugs have pretty much always been around just the laws against them are new
drug abuse simply became noticable enough to make alaw against it.

I don't know what the point was JS, I do know that I did feel really good with all of that stuff. Half the reason I weaned myself off was because I felt so good, anything that feels like that can't be good for you. I do know that some doctors will prescribe two different MAOI's for depression, my situation and that one are probably somewhat similar.
