The design of the Kelly Kettle resembles a bit an old electric Turkish samovar that I bought in a yard sale. Being as it was designed for 220v and came without a cord, I have never fired it up. It is a very pretty brass thing that is decorative when polished up. I bought it from a Russian in 1989 who said it was Turkish. It has nothing stamped on it.

I agree that Kelly kettles would be useful to Haitians, but these things are rather pricey at around $60 delivered. I would not want an aluminum kettle, as there is that think about Altzheimers and aluminum, which is why I no longer use my old expresso pots and have changed to a stainless steel French press. Also, aluminum has a way of burning up a lot faster.

Sanitation is not a Haitian thing , though God knows it should be. Haiti is a disaster even in normal times.

I have long felt there is a link between the two.

Why not just remove the cap?

If you make 20,000 you pay 7.5% like now and if you make 500,000 you pay, yes, 7.5%.

If you run the numbers, that alone will move the SS fund into solvency.

If you want to raise the FULL retirement entitlement ago, currently 65-67 then fine since we do indeed live longer. But, please do not reduce monthly benefits; many survive on SS alone.

I have no idea whether he actually swam or not, but, really, does this matter? Aren't there larger issues such as how to get this Great Recession turned around?

We all know he's good at PR, most of the time. He does come off well...

I beleive there should be NO mosque this close to Ground Zero but obviously the President disagrees.

I fail to understand why the Muslim community could not take the high road and take the offer from the city to build a bit further away. I know they have their opinion that they should be allowed to build closer but why promote antagonism? Why not just take the concilatory approach and build a bit further away? Unless, of course ,OTHER ISSUES such as inflexible thinking, "a points gotta be made!", etc are at play....

Well ,a reason why earmarks still exist is that local politics rules the land and ppl look to local politicians to "bring in the pork". The late Robert Byrd was notorious for earmarks and most West Virginians felt highly of him.

3DHS / Re: Why Obama will be a one-term President!
« on: August 17, 2010, 07:37:02 PM »
He will be elected to a second term because the ratbag right has alienated the Hispanics from voting for them, and because they have no candidates worth a damn. The only thing that might prevent this is the economic recovery, and if the Republicans screw up like they did under Gingrich, people will vote them out again in 2012.

Well, he probably will get, again, a vast majority of the black vote as well as the liberal white vote. Is that enough? Is the state of the economy enough to lose some of that vote? Where do Hispanics stand? How much do they hold The Obama Administration culpable? How will this effect their vote?

Back to the issue at hand, namely the first post in this thread: will earmarks be banned or not? By all or just a select few?

Thanks for the help, XO, but I've given up on "debating" - - i.e., exchanging insults with - - certain members of the group, and if they can't figure our my posts for themselves, then that's THEIR problem.

Gee, I hope I am not included. I go and come a lot because I get frustrated by the lack of civility.

Pretty shabby disaster recovery plan. Perhaps the Feds need to addresss this issue in present and future drilling ops.

Neither of us are experts in this arena, but if you constructed sand berms, and they then trapped the oil, wouldn't THAT be preferable than oil coating environmentally-sensitive marshlands?

After the calamity has run its course, thne you can address the oily sand berms BUT you will have protected sensitive marshlands and uncounted birds, fish and mammals.

President Obama did not cause the oil leak in any way, and has managed it almost exactly as well as McCain would have done. I fail to see how people can reasonably hold him responsible. Most of you seem to hold him guilty of just one thing: BPWB (being president while Black).

Actually, XO, alot of the issues surrounding the solving of this roblme are simply outside his control. For example, the experts are not Govt, but oil industry, so there's not a lot in that realm the President can do more than what he is currently doing.

But, he could respond MUCH DASTER to dealing with issues such as Lousisina environmental damage. For example, why delay Gov. Jindal's sand barrier idea? At this point, it is unclear you have much to lose, even long term:

"President Obama, who toured the area Friday, said federal officials were prepared to authorize moving forward with "a portion of" an idea proposed by local officials, who want the Army Corps of Engineers to build a "sand boom" offshore to keep the water from getting into the fragile marshlands." www.cnn.com.

He's just "preparing to authorize? You kidding me!? Jindal has been pleading for this for weeks!
