3DHS / Re: Microsoft Patents ?Avoid Ghetto? Feature For GPS Devices

There is no doubt in my mind that people aware of traffic cams are less likely
to chance sailing thru yellow or run thru just changed red lights any more.

And in many cases cause more traffic accidents because they slam on their breaks as soon as the yellow comes on, causing people behind them to hit them. Many intersections with traffic cameras have *higher* rates of accidents than they had before the cameras were installed.

Traffic cameras are nothing more than a "revenue source" for the cities installing them. They are currently illegal in Minnesota because a state judge said they violated various rights.

Lots of interstate highways run right through the middle of "ghettos". I-95 does. If you stay on the turnpikes and interstates and such, you are probably not in much danger from hoodlums. Certainly not if you are in a moving vehicle.

The article specified that it is for use with pedestrian modes of GPS travel (which many phones have).

Actually found a decent research paper about the extinction of black banjo players.

I find ostrich dry like rabbit. Is emu similiar?

Only if it's overcooked. Emu (and ostrich for that matter) are nearly all dark meat, so they tend to be moist. An emu burger looks almost like bison, with a bit less fat.

It is what needs to be done, and it clearly will have an impact.

Raising taxes 5% on those making over a million will generate about $36 billion. Ending the "tax holiday" will generate about $120 billion. This total is under $160 billion, or about 2 weeks of running the government. Right now, our yearly deficit amounts to about 160 days per year of deficit spending, so this change will only take care of 10% of our problem. It's not nearly enough.

A lot of the family restaurants (I try to avoid chains) serve bison and other "non standard" meats up here. Actually, one of my favorite burgers is emu.

It's the end of December in Minnesota, there is no snow on the ground, and we're setting heat records.

I normally go to Florida in January to warm up; this year it looks like we're going there to cool off. ;-)

And the reason for celebrating the birth of Christ when we do is also explained by the length of time of this celebration. Christ was most likely born in the spring; however in an agricultural society, taking off 2 weeks in the spring could be disastrous for the crops. So, the celebration is done in a period of time when the harvest and slaughter is already done, and no prep work for the next season is really needed yet. While Easter is (sometimes) celebrated during the spring planting season, it's only a three day celebration and is easier to work into a planting schedule.

The whole story: Christmas day is the celebration of the birth of Christ, and was usually spent in church. Then there was a period of time for travel for families to gather, symbolizing the travels of the three wise men from the east. During this time, according to legend, many came to see the Christ child and drop off gifts, which led to the tradition of people giving gifts every day during this period. The Feast of Epiphany on January 6th is the celebration of the arrival of the three wise men and the delivery of their gifts to the Christ child, and is the traditional day that a feast was held for families who had finally gathered during this holiday season. In feudal societies, this was also one of the feast days that a land owner was required to provide a feast to his vassals and serfs (the other was Easter).

You are correct in that the Roman Rite set the date for Christmas as December 25th. The eastern rite has it around January 6 or 7th.

The Feast of Epiphany is on January 6th. During the Middle Ages, the entire period between December 25th and January 6th was celebrated as one holiday, with a gift given on each day leading up to the Feast of Epiphany; hence the "Twelve Days of Christmas". The eve before Epiphany was sometimes called "Twelfth Night", and this is the traditional celebration used in the SCA in modern times.

I am sure that the religious shows you mention are planned in the same way.

*All* shows with a live audience are done this way. My wife and I went to a taping of Craig Ferguson, and it was very similar to what you describe. They almost put my wife in "lesbian row" but she didn't want to be separated from me.

What you and your fellow alinsky-ites did was take his statement and turn it into some  Reductio ad absurdum charge. In other words lies were told about what he said and what he meant.

Well, they *could* use the defense that they were "reading between the lines"...

If it is possible to turn off the ignition that is a good idea, I wonder if cars should automaticily kill ignition when airbags are ignited?

My car kills the ignition and also turns off the fuel pump. If an airbag is deployed, you have to hit a reset button on the fuel pump before you can start it again.

The truth is that cars do not always catch fire after a wreck , they do not always explode after they catch fire.
