When Chris Christie Attacks

FEBRUARY 9, 2011

By JOHN FUND

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie lashed out at his Democratic state legislature yesterday for paying
nothing more than lip service to his calls for rolling back generous public employee pensions and
reforming the civil service.

"They've done nothing on this issue," he said. "It is nothing but two-page press releases with bullet points.

That's not how you fix the big things in New Jersey." He also noted that 2011 is an election year in the
Garden State, in which voters will have a chance to make their opinion of any inaction known.

An interview with New Jersey Senate president Stephen Sweeney on the possibilities of reform.

Mr. Christie is feeling emboldened by new polls that show voters responding to his no-nonsense approach.
His own internal poll numbers are the highest they've been since his inauguration. And those numbers are
backed up by a new Quinnipiac University poll that finds residents of New Jersey approve of his job performance
by 52% to 40%, up six points from December. By 54% to 35%, they view his first year in office as a success,
with even 27% of Democrats agreeing.

You can bet that Mr. Christie will be touting those poll numbers as he lobbies legislators for his pension
reforms in the coming weeks.
