The Captain and Tenille, what a perfect name!

The Captain gets top billing and gets to wear the hat, but no one knows what his real name is, so Tenille gets most of the recognition.

If a singer says "I am one of the Pips", people know who he is.

If the Captain walks in, he has to be more specific. He can't just say "I'm the Captain" and get the recognition that Cher, Madonna or Lady Gaga get with a short name. He would have to say "I'm the Captain, of The Captain and Tenille."

I have always wondered if Fleetwood Mac was named for his favorite car or his favorite food.

Fleetwood Mac =  referenced the names of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie

John McVie later married a lady who became Christine McVie
and a member of Fleetwood Mac who although over-shadowed
by Stevie Nicks.....Christine McVie was a big part of Fleetwood Mac
a talented, classy lady....
here's Christine doing a song before she retired from Fleetwood Mac.

(i had this played at my neice's funeral....she was a big Fleetwood Mac fan)

He was known as Daryl Dragon when he played with the Beach Boys.

The Captain's name is indeed Darryl Dragon. It is a distinctive name for a group. The Captain and Tennille are married, so apparently love has kept them together. Tennille is a surname.
Dragons are not thought of as particularly musical creatures (except for Puff, but he was magic).

I was unaware that Fleetwood Mac were actual names. Again, an unusual and memorable name.

Better than "Bob and Joe" or "Fred and Julie", for example.

I rather like both groups.

I was unaware that Fleetwood Mac were actual names.

There was/is nobody named Lynyrd Skynyrd in that band.
The name came from a mocking tribute to a high school PE teacher
who was notorious for strictly enforcing the school's policy against boys having long hair.

There was/is nobody named Jethro Tull in the band Jethro Tull.
The name was "borrowed" from an 18th century agriculturalist/inventor.

There was nobody named Dan in STEELY DAN
name was taken from William Burrough's book "Naked Lunch".
In it Steely Dan is the nickname given to a giant steam-powered dildo
(see cover photo on their first album

The name was "borrowed" from an 18th century agriculturalist/inventor.

Actually, the full story is even more interesting. When Jethro Tull was starting up, many small venues would only book groups for one night, and if they did not do well they would never book that group again. So, the band who became known as Jethro Tull would pull bands names from a large number of sources (including history) so they could be booked into many venues for more than one night - performing one night under one name, then another night under a different name, etc.

At one point, a venue went looking to book an act that done well for them again - a band known as Jethro Tull. So, that is the name that stuck.

Anyone know how Lionel Richie's "The Commodores" came up with their name?   ;D   It's "interesting", not to mention the potential of what they could have been known as

My favorite tale of how a backup group got its name I am sure you have all heard of "Buddy Holly and the Crickets".

IIRC, according to Lionel, when the group was 1st forming, they decided to toss a dictionary up, and someone already chosen, with eyes closed (or blindfolded) would put their finger onto the open page, and whatever word the finger was on....*poof*....the new name of the band

We almost had the Commodes     ;)
