shunning technology
« on: July 20, 2011, 11:14:12 AM »
we just gave up making our own space travel. will this be the start when we will backslide in technology? I hear europe has better tech then us. my birth country has better internet than here.

in fact broadband is even restricted so the need for faster internet is not very viable at the moment.(250 gig per month)

maybe because they don't spend enormous resources on space travel?
and spend ernormous resources protecting other countries that should protect themselves?

The US has not given up on space travel, only MANNED space travel.

Foreign aid is a very small part of the national budget. Perhaps we could cut down on aid to Israel and South Korea. Aid to the former hurts us, and perhaps the Koreans can afford to pay more for their own defense.

Leaving Iraq and Afghanistan would save lots more money.

Foreign aid is a very small part of the national budget.

But it is still a huge amount of money.
The State and Foreign Operations section of the CR contains a total of $44.9 billion in funding.
44 billion could go a long way towards improving the things Kimba is complaining about.

Leaving Iraq and Afghanistan would save lots more money.

No it wouldn't.......in fact there are enormous costs to a "cut and run" policy.
Thats like saying to your dentist when they advise a filling for a cavity
"No I'll wait until it gets much worse & it festers/rots until it needs an emergency root canal"
Thats not "saving lots of money".....thats stupid, reckless, and in the end costs more money!

The James Webb space telescope, the successor to Hubble, just came one step closer to being thrown in the trash bin over budget cuts. Yesterday the House Committee on Appropriations approved a plan to slash NASA's budget for next year and explicitly kill the project.

I am not happy about the loss of this hard science project.
Science pays, couriosity feeds, loss of vision perishes.

But hey we are low on money.

I don`t exactly see it totally a money issue.
ex. my town want free wifi for the whole city but does not want the sponser to make any money from advertizing.

schools are perfectly capable of getting free supplies but are forbidden to let the sponser advertise  in the schools.

internal factors are in play that stops progress

Students should not be bombarded with ads at school.  City wide WiFi would be inexpensive and do everyone a lot of good. Maybe the could support it by selling billboard space.

Sounds good to me,but I very familiar with the supervisors thinking methods or lack of it and is pretty sure they would not like it. It took almost ten years to get public toilet because the supervisor were against advertising kiosk to be inplace to fund the toilet.

It makes me wonder what sort of person thinks someone is going to buy something because of an ad he saw while taking a dump.

You never know untill you try.
Some really silly ad campaigns have demonstrated effect on sales.

Newspapers full of ads have been read for decades while sitting on a toilet.

I'm guessing the ads were on the outside of the kiosks.

Depends would be an excellent client.

When you read a newspaper while sitting on the throne, you might be reading the ad by choice.

In that case, that ad is far more likely to get attention than some poster stuck on the wall.

I tend to take involuntary ads less seriously myself, and i am sure that I am not the only one. If ads in toilet stalls could provide free broadband in my community, I would be all for it. I simply question that the advertisers would find it to be cost-effective.
