US is biggest giver of Horn of Africa famine aid

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? A U.N. list of countries donating aid money to the Horn of Africa famine shows that the U.S. is by far the biggest donor, having given around $580 million in aid this year.

The U.N. says the world community has given $1.1 billion in aid so far, but that $1.3 billion more is needed to help the more than 12 million people in need. At least 30,000 people have already died.

Britain is the second-biggest donor at $205 million, followed by Japan and Australia. Saudi Arabia is next at $60 million. It is the biggest donor from the Muslim world.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday announced another $17 million in U.S. funding. She said the drought is a reminder of the need to invest in global agriculture.

When I see the stories and commercials for aid to Somalia and Mogadishu, I think of the scenes of people cheering in the street as the bodies of dead American soldiers were dragged through the streets.

The first thought that comes to mind is let 'em starve.

The people who are starving are not the ones who fought the US troops.

But they are the ones who were cheering.

I guess now they are rethinking their actions, or the actions of their parents or grandparents, then. And I didn't say they were the ones who fought us, I said they cheered as the bodies were dragged through the streets. The ones who sat on their asses and let the warlords and Al Qaeda take over, then cheered as they killed Americans and abused their bodies. They didn't want us then, but they beg for our help now. They can choke on it.

They were probably not the ones who were cheering, either.

Somalia is a pretty large country. The people who were cheering were in Mogadishu. The refugees are from the majority of the population, who live in rural areas. They mostly have no radios, let alone TV teams taking their pictures.

It does seem rather harsh to say that the penalty for cheering should be starvation, though.

  No,... seems appropriate to me.

Lets say that the guys that were cheering at your lynching get caught, what level of punishment is appropriate?

Howsomever there is a struggle in Africa which slops over all of the borders, Militant Islam , against the Christian and Animist resistance.
Should we feed the friendly and perhaps even the nutral?
Shall we feed the children of our worst enemys not only of compassion but in hope of change?

I doubt that the starving Somalis were cheering anyone. They were most likely tending sheep and goats in the Sahel somewhere. Somalia is largely rural, and most of the famine is in the rural areas, where the crops have failed and the livestock has died. Look at a map and you can see that a hike from Mogadoshu to the Kenyan border is a long, long ways.

If foreign troops invaded your town and went through the streets shooting guns, by the way, I doubt that they would be very popular. The people of Mogadishu likely did not know what the US troops were up to. Nor do we have troops that are fluent in Somali.

Those cheering were at the worst, Blackamoor versions of Kramer, happy to see a few of those who were shooting off their machine guns to get shot themselves.
