McCain Misses Classified Briefing While Blasting White House
By Jonathan Karl | ABC OTUS News

Senator John McCain is demanding answers on the Benghazi attack, but his office tells ABC News he missed a classified briefing on the subject because of a "scheduling error."

The classified briefing was held on Wednesday before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee - of which Senator McCain is a member - and lasted three hours. It featured testimony by officials from the State Department, the Pentagon, the CIA and the National Counterterrorism Center.

During part of the briefing, McCain was holding a press conference demanding answers about the administration's handling of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya on Step. 11 that killed four Americans, including US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens. McCain called on Congress to launch Watergate-style hearings to get to the bottom of what happened.

"More than two months after the Benghazi attack, there are still many unanswered questions," McCain told reporters in the Capitol Hill press conference. "While we await the findings and recommendations of the administration's internal review of the Benghazi attack, it's essential for the Congress to conduct its own independent assessment."

At precisely the same time McCain was holding that press conference, the briefing for the Homeland Security Committee was happening in another part of the Capitol building.

Why did he missing the briefing on a subject he has been so adamant in demanding answers on? McCain's office says his absence was unintentional - an oversight.

"Senator McCain was absent from the hearing due to a scheduling error," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers told ABC News.

Even if he had attended, McCain was unlikely to be satisfied with what he heard.

After the briefing was over, the top Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, Senator Susan Collins, was asked if she was satisfied with the hearing.

"I really wasn't," Collins answered. "There are many, many unanswered questions. I feel that we've only scratched the surface through the briefings that we had today."

There are currently at least four Senate Committees looking into the Benghazi attack. For her part, Sen. Collins does not agree with McCain's call to combine those into one special - or "select" - committee like the one that investigated Watergate.

" I do not see the benefit of, nor the need for a select committee," Collins said. "Our committee, our Homeland Security Committee has government-wide jurisdiction and a history of producing comprehensive bipartisan reports on everything from the Ft. Hood terrorist attack to Hurricane Katrina, so I don't see the need for creating a brand new select committee to take a look at this."

The White House had no immediate comment on McCain's absence from the hearing, but one former White House official was quick to jump on it.

"It is nothing short of appalling that Senator McCain would use his time and influence to play politics instead of getting answers to the questions he claims to have," said Bill Burton of the pro-Obama group Priorities USA.

Is it more important to hold a press conference to bitch about the President, or do his job?

Refresh my memory.....how many daily security briefings did Obama attend prior to 911 attack?

Whining about the president is an important part of his job.

I am sure that he regrets missing that breifing, but can we now go over what those who did attend were told?

If he missed a meeting in which no new info was given , it is like he missed swimming in an empty pool.

The word "moot" ought to be used , but I obviously don't know what Moot is.

The report did not say no new info was given, just that McCain would likely not be satisfied with what was given.

And Sirs, are you asking, with all the state of the art communications available to the White House, if Obama might have missed a daily security briefing while on the road campaigning? If so, why did this question never come up during Bush's re-election campaign? I mean, what's fair for the goose...

And did you miss the irony that McCain missed a classified briefing on the very thing he was kvetching about?

I don't think that Ironic and  Moot fit well together.

Did you note that the peoples attitude twards this meeting is the news?

There is no news involving anything like news or information as reguards this meeting.

So complaining that McCain failed to learn anything at this meeting is like complaining that he failed to go flying in a rowboat or sailing in a P-51 or mountain climbing in Florida. There are missing elements required for certain verbs to be accomplished and fit.

You in this case are missing an important element for the learning that should happen at a breifing , that is, information.

McCain likes to sound off. This was the political equivalent of"get off my lawn!"

So, I take it you were privy to this classified briefing? You seem so confident nothing new came of it. The report did not say that, only that McCain would likely not have liked what did come out.

I have great confidence that if the most newsworthy part of the breifing is the absentee, that nothing of great import was in the information offered.

And Sirs, are you asking, with all the state of the art communications available to the White House, if Obama might have missed a daily security briefing while on the road campaigning?

But here's the issue, is Obama just "so much smarter" to just be able to absorb some report vs briefings specifically designed to clearly lay out what the latest security updates & threats are?  If memory serves me right, Veep Biden made it painfully clear that neither he nor Obama knew anything about any increased security requests, out of Libya.  Perhaps that portion of the report given to Obama had too much speghetti sauce on it, at one of his fundraisers, to accurately read.

If so, why did this question never come up during Bush's re-election campaign?

IIRC, it wasn't really brought up, because he apparently wasn't missing any of them.  And if he did, he was fortunate enough not to have missed them right before some terrorist attack

And did you miss the irony that McCain missed a classified briefing on the very thing he was kvetching about?

Nope, didn't miss that.....though of course, I suppose you could apply the same "state of the art" communication apparatus, that McCain could have had access to, with his high level security clearance

Lets try this again shall we?

The briefing was classified. You understand what a classified briefing is I'm sure. Now, did you think that if there was some important news that those who attended it would address the press afterwards to say, "there was very important news in that meeting but even though it will change the course of human events we can't tell you."?

If it is nearly that level of importance , then they that know should ensure that everyone that needs to know knows.
I know no reason to think this so...

Rather , since all who did attend have no such thing to say , and there seems no importance attached to insuring that Senator McCain gets notes from this .
I think it safe to assume that the import of the info amounts to iota.
