It is difficult to judge the veracity of people who want the US to join a war.
Now we learn that Henry Kissinger had convinced Gerald Ford to attack Cuba, because they were making us look weak by fighting Savimbe in Angola.

Carter won the election and Kissinger was shut out, fortunately.
However, he was the one who convinced Carter to admit the Shah to the US, even though the Shah was known to have an incurable and inoperable cancer.

The goal of Kissinger's plan was successful: he provoked the hostage crisis and ruined Carter's ability to run the country.
