It's actually called reality.  Something that can no longer be used as a club for a weapon, because its broken, can be used as a stabbing instrument if the ends are nice & jagged, and the person can get close enough.  When someone is charging you, you have EVERY RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF....WITH LETHAL FORCE IF NECESSARY

That's the biggest advantage of a firearm.....it can defend from a distance, before someone can get close enough to make that firearm nothing more than a club itself.  You would know this if you had ANY knowledge of firearms training and their use

   This policeman is pretty lucky that there was not a better stick right there, if he got a Baseball bat or something that would not have broken getting the first hit might have harmed enough to prevent that return fire.

    How much is a policeman responsible for estimating the lethality of a weapon he is being attacked with?

Some flagpoles are better weapons than others. Solid wooden ones are certainly better than hollow metal ones.
