If it had been the work of Rove's dirty tricksters or the F.B.I., those bozos wouldn't have had the creative energy and artistic imagination to create an image in human form with the face of death - - they would have used a simple manikin with a human face dressed to LOOK like an American soldier - - "look, Ma, they're burnin' Billy Bob."

I didn't see the face of this effigy. It looked pretty much like a jungle camo uniform stuffed full of paper.

In any event, if the goal is to win support for the anti-war effort, this is clearly NOT the way to do it. It is rather like the alleged spitting on soldiers after the Vietnam mess. I never saw a soldier spat upon in photo or real life, and I think that it was either very rare or never actually happened.

Back in 1966, in Washington State I picked up a soldier on the Grays Harbor-Olympia highway, and took him to SeaTac Airport, where he was taking a plane back to Vietnam after being on leave. We talked about the weather and pretty much everything else, and I told him to be careful and not get hurt and that I thought the war was a mess, and he said "but someone's got to do it". My opinion was that no one had to do it, especially me, but I didn't see any reason to debate the war with him, so I didn't.

I'm pretty sure the photos were not from Reuters so we can be reasonably certain the y weren't doctored.

But that was some very good spin Mikey. No believeable but very good. Keep practicing, you will need it in the next couple years.

Afterward, a splinter group of 50 self-proclaimed anarchists led their own march to the Multnomah County Justice Center at SW 3rd and Madison, stopping on the way at NW Park and Morrison and again near Pioneer Place Mall, to confront the police, yelling slogans including, "Whose streets? Our streets!"

At least 60 riot police from the cops' Rapid Response Team lined up outside the Justice Center, accompanied by bike cops, to face off against a group of around 800 protesters—led by the anarchists with a banner reading, "No God, No Country, No Masters." The police arrested 14 people, mainly on disorderly conduct charges, and for interfering with police officers.

"These people were not connected to the peace rally at all," says police spokesperson Catherine Kent. "It was a separate group of anarchists with a confrontational agenda."

Either way a soldier got burned in effigy, tainting the peace marchers.
