Seamus, you place me in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with Michael Tee.  You are a breath of fresh air.  I also find myself seconding Plane's BZ - a position which I find far more comfortable.

You're pretty good at this.  Keep it up.

You and Plane are going to embarrass me.  It's not a contest or anything.  It's just like it was explained in my intro post.  The reason I want to find a decent debate site is to keep my mind open, as well as others.  But I won't be bullied, either.   Plane suggested that in order for respect to be earned around here, it needs to be given first.  I love my country, I believe it's the best.  Otherwise I'd move!  (Honestly! Ask the different pharmacies I've done business with!)  That being said, we are surely FAR from perfect.  But we strive, as most do, to grow.  The potential for greatness is vast here in th US.  (And that is DEFINITELY my glass-half-full side!)

I just wish I could grasp...  in-depth concepts.  Like economics.  That is fascinating, and I believe we (Americans) need to be paying attention.  But for what, and why, I couldn't tell you.  Besides the fact that two economists will tell you two different things, it's also partially driven by emotional human responses.

In any case, thanks for the welcome and the encouraging words.  I'll try to stay around, but my shrink would be rather upset if he knew I was here. :)  I take things personally when I shouldn't, so while I feel this is good exercise, he would say I'm like an alcoholic hanging out in a bar.  I'm asking for trouble. :)

Sirs, I'm sure you weren't thinking of this song, but this is what came to mind:

Ditto Pooch's post, my friend...
Pass it over
To me....

You and Plane are going to embarrass me.  It's not a contest or anything.

No, it's not, though sometimes it seems that way around here.  But I wasn't suggesting you were "winning" anything.  Rather, I was suggesting that you are displaying an open-minded and even-tempered attitude and a good sense of reason.  Those are golden traits in reasonable debate.  A lot of posters  - and MT is one of them, as I am - sometimes lose their temper and let fly with insults and angry outbursts.  (We do a lot of apologizing around here - lol!)  And a few posters seem to base their arguments almost exclusively on such things.  But at its best, this place is great for examining one's beliefs, prejudices and pre-conceived notions.  It is a good place to learn, too.  One thing you pick up quickly around here is to make sure your facts ARE facts instead of opinions, and to be prepared to have your opinions challenged by some pretty sharp thinkers.  There is nothing wrong with allowing your opinion to evolve as new information comes to light.  It is one of the things I like most about this place.

That said, I have an enormous ego, so when I am dogged out by some of the more aggressive posters here it doesn't bother me.  My ego was earned through survival, so I have developed a very thick skin (and a skull to match, I might add!).  But occasionally someone does find the thin spots.  You have said that you won't be bullied - good for you.  But if some of the aggressiveness does manage to get to you, be aware that many of the posters on this site take extended breaks from the place when the air gets a little thick.  If you get angry or hurt and lash out or take a break, nobody will hold it against you for the most part.  Like most saloons, there are bar brawls in here, and they usually end with all of the parties involved sitting back down at the bar together and drinking each other's health.

Another thing you'll learn if you read enough of my posts is that a Pooch post is never a SHORT one.  :D

And that is one of the things I've been looking for myself.  I would NEVER say I have all the answers.  Heck, I doubt I'd say I have a couple of answers!  I believe this is because I don't tend to think that any ONE answer suits all situations.  However, Tee and others (including you, I believe) have struck me as people who want to discuss things, rather than try and "win" an argument.  Imo that's the only way true debate can be successful.

I expect it will bother me at some point.  There are SOME topics I'll avoid, because they hit too close to, as you put it, my thin spots.  But I am a work in progress, even at my age, and hearing other peoples differing views is really refreshing.  Especially when they can both paint a picture I can understand, AND help me see it from a side I haven't before.  There is nothing like hearing an argument that makes no sense to me.  Very frustrating.  But so far, people here have all seemed pretty clear headed.   Oh, but you all also have a kind of... familiarity between yourselves.  I get the impression most of you have been here pretty long together.

No, but there is a difference in verbose and running on and on and....  If you're clear about what your saying, I prefer verbose.  Again, it helps fill in more of my understanding.  Obviously a post that says what, why, and how, etc. would be more constructive than one saying "That's wrong."

Again, thank you and Tee and Sirs and Plane and everyone for helping the new guy adjust to the place.

Your shrink is as welcome here as anyone .
If you are ready to match wits with someone who is hostile to you and your ideas we aren't going to hurt you .
If we are going to hurt you I would rather you wern't here.

This site is somehing like the real world, where disagreement can spark hostility , but in here you are outside of rifle range of anyone you might have offended.
I invite you to invite your Shrink to our group , we don't have to be introduced , nor even know who he is.

As you can see, I've been a LITTLE quiet the past day, preferring to watch others interactions.  Really, there is quite a bit of hostility around here!  And, from my view, quite a bit of it is not constructive!   I've had small things I may have liked to comment here and there, but amongst the...  HEAT that I've read, I felt "why bother?"  I get the feeling that some of th more vocal people here are here just to shout their cause rather than talk about them.  And like religious or political fanatics, I think it's the 5% of people that believe something that are doing 70% of the flaming of the fires.

I am hanging around.  If I feel moved to respond, I will probably do so.  But I appreciate your caring about me, and I do care about myself, so I'll be more on the sidelines I think.

Oh!  But while I AM writing...  I've noticed a NUMBER of people post news articles and blog posts and other information from various sources.  But they are not, themselves, writing anything.  Like, no opinion, positive or negative.  When people do this, are they looking for opinions on what was written?  Or is it an FYI thing?  Or are they in response to requests for information?  Or something else?

Thanks

This forum serves several purposes and one is simply a place to introduce information to an interested audience.  So people will often post an article or blog entry of interest just to add to the general information.  Lanya, for example, often posts articles from other sources.  She is less verbose than, say, Michael or myself, but when she speaks she can debate with the best of them.  Everybody has a different style in quoting other sources.  I tend to cut and paste articles completely, while still providing a link to the original.  Some people will cite the link and post nothing at all, preferring to allow the readers to click on the link if they are interested.  Still others will cite a link and post a paragraph or two or a relevent quote from the original, so that you can read the entire original if the point interests you.  Some add their own comments, others like to allow the source to stand on its own.

Incidentally, you should know that posting links can be very important.  Quoting a source without appropriate acknowledgement can be a violation of copyright.  Reproducing work from other sources can be done generally under the "fair use" provisions of copyright laws, but we have to be careful not to plagarize.

When I post an article, I am both looking to pass on information I think will interest people on the forum and to get the varied opinions that interest may generate.  Its a great way to learn.  Often, the information others provide adds to my knowledge.  Sometimes, when a poster brings up a counter argument, I have to research the facts to make an informed reply.  This broadens your horizons wonderfully.

You are right that many of us have been here for years, on and off, and certain relationships develop over time.  You are also right that some people are more likely to flame than others.  MT and I tend to rub each other the wrong way, but we usually get over it.  Some others, and I will not single out anyone, seem to be at war with the world in general, or the opposite political viewpoint in particular.  I don't think you'll find many debate sites where that isn't true to some extent.
Oh, for a muse of fire, that would ascend the brightest heaven of invention . . .

Plane,
I can't read it much anymore without getting a headache.  I am doing lots of drawing (with a mouse).  I don't know how to post images or I would show  a drawing to you.  Landscapes.

Here's something I read that you might like:

I'm going to have to go visit your state some day. It's where my great-grandma was born in about 1861, and she lived through the burning of Atlanta.

And I don't think Knute has even posted yet since you've been here. Wait 'til you get a load of his "posting style."

When you are ready to post reply there is a panel of buttons above the page one of them is img if you put the cursor on it it will say insert image and if you strike it it will print on the screen a phrase like this img][/img but the brackets will be complete.

find a pleaseing image on the internet and right click on it some will not allow you to copy but those that will will show you a panel of choices the bottom choice is "properties"
Click on properties and observe the web address that is then shown it will probly end in" jpg"

Copy the web adress from propertys to your clip board then paste it in between the img] and the [/img

That should work most of the time .
